Using Cube to play an RPG over the net

by fantomx11 on 06/28/2011 14:25, 6 messages, last message: 07/30/2011 05:46, 1858 views, last view: 05/01/2024 23:57

I GM a game for some friends over the internet and we currently use MapTool which will allow 2D maps. However, I was recently thinking that an FPS that allowed instant editing would be a nice way to increase the immersion. That's how I stumbled upon Cube. I have a few questions and since I can't get it to run on my Linux PC (I will try my Windows PC when I have more time), but I wanted to ask a few questions that relates to my purposes for the game.

1. Is it possible to have one person editing while the others are playing.

2. Is it possible to have the monsters not react to the players, or even better, take control of the monsters myself.

And for those confused about the subject, I am not interested in an RPG where you play through a game that has been already plotted and created, like Mass Effect. I'm looking for an engine that will allow me to play a pen-and-paper RPG using first-person perspective.

If you modified the source code, everything is possible.

http://cubeengine.com/cube.php4
I refer:
"Allows in-engine editing of geometry in full 3D (you fly around the map, point / drag stuff to select it / modify it), which can even be done simultaneously with others in multiplayer (a first!)."

Seems like you can edit while other people are playing, but as far as I'm aware of that's ONLY in coop-edit (so not free for all, instant gib, tactics arena, etc).

I'm pretty sure you can't "tag" a monster like it's some kind of pet. You'll have to do that your own if you want to reach that...

The lighting on the maps does not automatically calculate as you edit, either. If you and your friends don't mind playing on fullbright maps (meaning no ambient lighting) than this is not really a huge issue.

Don't despair! I'm digging your awesome idea, and I'm sure that whatever you come up with will be epic!

Count me really, really, interested. If you decide to mod in features to run a campaign with Sauerbraten, I hope you start a blog or something to keep us updated.

#5: Been thinking about this myself!

Hey there -
I've been thinking about this sort of thing myself. In my mind it'd require quite some massive rewriting of the base-engine .. basically rip out all the "game-mode" stuff and replace it with character-sheets, world/map-overview and 1st/3rd-person "in scenario" settings.

In my mind the DM/GM would then be able to trigger changes in the view - he'd have to have the scenarios prepared though - some basic "random encounter"-places might be a good idea to be provided by the game-developers .. or maybe could even be done with some randomization processes.

The monsters - and combat in general - would have to dealt with in some way that's close to the pen-and-paper way, but hopefully a little more fluent and immersive.

So - yeah - I'm interested as well.

You lie to your self about people around you to believe no one can understand you, so you do not take the time to venture the reality you left alone.
Eluding your self the truth that the person in front of you can be humble and wise will get you nowhere in life.

A suggestion: talk+people= a friend

Other thoughts: your on the net lol... getting a good date not a problem! ;"]

Now to get back on topic ugh uh there is minecraft donno if it free or not since I haven't had the time to play it.
