Creating maps in Blender

by legodt on 06/06/2011 01:32, 12 messages, last message: 06/07/2011 15:06, 3265 views, last view: 05/04/2024 00:07

Hello Sauerbraten fans! Recently, I have whipped up an awesome game map in Blender (flat ground based) and would love to export into Sauerbraten for playing. I understand that Sauerbraten has rudimentary support for certain 3D formats, but am not aware of how it treats the objects. Is it possible to bring my creation to the game from Blender? Thank you in advance for any tips or help!

Yes and no.

Models have certain limitations, such as only having a box as its collision model and, no shadows, a single light and a single texture per mesh.
This makes it anything but ideal.

I'd suggest exporting your map as an OBJ and using it as a guide to form the proper map from cubes

I'm excited about this! If it's fun to play on post it at www.quadropolis.us as a concept map!
Remember to you use, mdlcollide 0 ,in the .cfg file for no collision and then clip floors and walls!

<a href="http://sauerbraten.org/docs/models.html">Model reference</a> is very handy as always!

That's as retarded as it sounds, assuming you DID read Hirato's answer.

I think you missed a part where legodt wrote, I understand that Sauerbraten has rudimentary support for certain 3D formats,!

And again, read Hirato's reply to understand why it's a bad idea.

It's a good idea testing something other than just octree and seeing it!

Alrighty then, is there any way to simply import maps into Sauerbraten sans the Cube editing system? This Blender model could just as easily be Quake .MAP file in a matter of hours.

Do you even realise how models work in sauer? When you do, try to keep thinking using an model for a map is a good idea.

There's nothing simple about it! Object format gives you a way to edit it using a simple text editor! Oh and correct Me if I'm wrong quadropolis has file size upload limit of about ten megabytes! So you might want to use an external upload link!

Razgriz, instead of flaming comments that helps no one but your own ego! Say something productive!

Excuse me, but suggesting using an unclipped model, and then forming the world out of clip is as bad as it sounds. It's not about feeding my own ego here rather than you realizing that models are not a good idea to use as a map.

First of, model lighting is primitive. Second, forming the whole map out of clip based on the model is gonna take FAR more time than it would by remaking it. You'd be playing with empty space and lots of materials, which is really not worth the time.

Sure thing, you can render maps in whatever program you want, but you'd have to write a utility that converts the model into octrees and places them. But even then, the octree is more physically limited which WILL cause problem with certain shapes. Then again, assuming you manage to load the map into the game, you'd have to retexture everything. Unless you also find a way to designate the model's texture onto the surfaces, which, if changed even a slight bit, could mess the whole thing up.

It's 2 am and i've been awake for 20 hours already, so i can't think of any further reasons right now. Either way, i won't argue your logic any further. Do whatever you want, i've spoken my mind, and if you fail, well, it's your problem. Good luck with that.
