Medieval-style Sauerbraten

by AlternateLives on 05/03/2011 03:24, 12 messages, last message: 07/25/2011 17:59, 2725 views, last view: 05/04/2024 13:01

I've been thinking lately...
(I know, that's a terrible thing, but still...)

Anyway, I noticed that most, if not all, FPS games are set from the early 1900's up. why is that? is there any reason why swinging swords and shooting longbows are limited to the 3rd person?

Why not a Sauer 'patch' or 'mod' with such a concept?

What are your thoughts? Would you play a "High Fantasy" shooter? Would anyone want to collaborate on a project like this?

Nothing definite at this point, but food for thought...

Thanks to a previous post here, allow me to clarify a bit:

No FPS game that I know of has ever used purely medieval weapons within the game.

I see what I am thinking of as purely a "shooter": Players would run around hacking each other with assorted medieval weapons, from clubs to swords to spears. in addition, a player could shoot enemy from a ways off with either a crossbow or a bow, similar to the rifle or pistol, respectively. The gameplay would be far from RPG: it would still be the same fast-paced run-n-gun gameplay you know and love!

The melee weapons would act more like Freeman's crowbar (from HL2), except that each one would do different amounts of damage and attack speed. For example, a lower class weapon, say, a club would do about pistol damage, whereas a big-@$$ sword would instantly kill a player. something like a dagger or short sword would allow a player to attack faster, they could throw rocks (stand-in for grenade), et cetera.

This involves Sauer in two ways: first, this would allow the Cube 2 engine to break brand new ground, while still remaining true to it's philosophy. Second, 'Braten would be a great "test chamber" to see if such a concept would be player friendly.

Think of it this way: It gives "oldskool gameplay" a whole new meaning while at the same time demonstrating the skull-bludgeoning power of mace from the first person!

So I guess a chainsaw death match is the funniest multiplayer mode ever ?

I found it super boring.

Well, more like Insta, which is hugely popular on the servers (as a few have bemoaned.) The 'chainsaw' gets a bit more use in this one.

Have you...ever played any of the Elder Scrolls games?

First person shooter set in a medieval time period.

True, it's not online deathmatch style of game, but it's still a first person shooter with maces, swords, bows and arrows.

There was such a freeware project using the Source engine some years ago. I have no idea what happened to it. It was hilarious and crappy at the same time ^_^

It had some nice models and animations though. They just had no way of coordinating it and actually making it work as a game. Another problem was that the devs didn't have time to work on it, so the project stopped i think in 2008 (not entirely sure)

a few games which are full conversion mods and are.. kinda deathmatch style medieval games. included is each game name. and the link to the mod. they are from steam store. so yeah. ive tried each. no complaints. except not enough people play them to even begin a 1 on 1 match.

Pirates, Vikings, and Knights II

Age of Chivalry

i think one was taken down. not sure. i helped recently with a mod of team fortress 2. it was a total conversion mod using the same styling as tf2. except it was medieval. and no ranged weapons. but i was trying to help them with making a mage character. so far... i believe they have a berserker. and a knight. they said something about a ninja class. i assume for spy or scout. and cleric/priest for medic. and a mage. probably similar to demoman... depending on how it works. actually... now that i think about it. a tf2 medieval version would be totally cool. gotta get workin on that. sorry. anyways. what i suggest. is get some knowledge on the coding used in sauerbraten. gather a few people who are good in other areas of coding and such. learn to code. and voila do it yourself. so then. good luck. need any more advice. email me @ roszondas3@gmail.com

~C++ forever guys!!~

oh. and just remind me who u are and whatnot. my memory is actually terrible. so. yeah. link me to my post if you have to >.>

Wish I could try it. I downloaded it and found out it was windows-based, which will not run on OSX.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll have a look at the configs. Thanks anyway!

That should be a matter of compiling it yourself (as far as I heard)...
