Awsome! The model lighting makes everything blend together better now, and some of the new maps are pretty good. :)

#12: Mature?

by spentron-postcrash2 on 12/26/2003 02:06

Longer time between releases for less change, must mean this is getting to be a mature project. After a bit of trying it out, though, must say it was worth doing. Was dissappointed to see no more SP maps, but that seems to be the way things are going.

It does break some maps. I went ahead and threw some lights around in mm4, since the main area was unlighted, being only models, "water" and skybox. Update here: http://www.intergate.com/~spentron/cube/mm

I'll probably test sticking the old engine into the current version for Shadowland. I presume that I can distribute the old engine (almost surely legal, just asking if there is any objection). Haven't decided if the 6-24-02 or 10-20-02 version is more appropriate (original looks vs. savegame, tough call).

the new version works with SDL again (old one was broken with newer SDL version)

it seems to run faster

there are problems:
* in single player (couldn\'t test out multiplayer till now), there appears lag, every 10 seconds or so, for about 2 seconds
* starting a \"multiplayer\" game (voting on client) after a short time I got a segmentation fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)

(this is kinda similiar to the error of the previous release not working:
\"Fatal signal: Floating Point Exception (SDL Parachute Deployed)\")

It\'s nice to see cube is still progressing :)

#14: linux issue

by hungerburg on 12/26/2003 15:34

when unpacking the zip, the archive's files are created with mode 666 - is this a reverence to id's doom? it sure is *bad* on a multiuser setup.

if eiruhl zipped the archive, correct permissions could be stored, and a number of foreseeable support requests from linux newbies were not necessary. just unzip cube[date]zip, click on cube_unix, play the game.

quick fix (type into a terminal):

cd /where/cube/is/unzipped/
chmod 644 $(find . -type f)
chmod 755 cube_unix unix_bin/linux_client

Thats great!

(The new soundtracks are also huge!)

shack/blues are the only major game sites I send something to. Smaller sites are opengl.org, flipcode, gamedev, doomworld (hah), func_messageboard, happypenguin, linuxgames.

So any sites not in that list, feel free to post, and let us know. A convenient list of new features are on the main page of cubeengine.com

spentron, what exactly does it break then? I would advise you to make sure the map runs on the new version, there's no point supporting the old version, much less including it with a map :)

the lag is typically something on your system. I assure you, there's nothing in my code to cause that kind of behaviour.

The floating point exception I don't know... but first need to see if others have this too.

yup, this maybe is unfortunate. Luckily linux users all know how to use chmod. they do, right? oh damn...
