Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

Cube 2 as film tool: discuss

by AlternateLives on 03/10/2011 23:11, 7 messages, last message: 03/14/2011 04:57, 1585 views, last view: 04/29/2024 08:34

I have been kicking around the idea about using Cube2 as a possible engine for shooting an animated film. The tools necessary are already there (map editing, importing models, spectator mode and movie recording, etc.) so I would like to hear thoughts on this, and perhaps we could get something going as well! who knows?

you must be new here. let me explain how this works, no one cares, if you want to do it, you do it. instead of making a post on the forum about what you could do, make a post on the forum about what you have done.

It's very possible. I've actually used sauer a couple times to make sort of "virtual sets" for short films and experiments.

What I did was use a bright blue skybox as a makeshift bluescreen and dark textures for the geometry. Then used a slow floatspeed to fly through the environment. Also I created a bind that zoomed in very slowly for a neat dolly zoom ('hitchcock') effect. Recorded with fraps.

It works surprisingly well, just take the footage into your editor and chroma key the blue away...and bam you have 3d environments. I mixed mine with footage of a real person to make it look like he was inside the world.

I know this isn't exactly what you're talking about but maybe it'll give you ideas.

You would have to pull a pretty good key to get it look really good, but I see what you are saying. Nice job! I never thought about using 'Braten as effects software.

Yes, I am new here. Thank you for pointing that out.

Part of the point of the post is to possibly get some ideas on how to do something like this, and perhaps find some people who would like to be a part of it.

Judging by the nature of your post, I am guessing you don't fall into either category.

If you search this forum for "machinima" you'll find several people over the years have experimented with using sauerbraten for filming. Things done in the past include the likes of: a mod that tapped into the demo recording so they could playback and seek to 'frames' in a demo. Also a variety of camera control mods... Have fun!

Moviecube comes to mind, but it seems to have been discontinued since December (2010).

Do you know what the word "discuss" means?
