I'd say this would make it require less skill, since getting a kill would require both good aim and good luck. Right now all you need is good aim.

How about we just give everyone a shotgun and chaingun and see how much fun instagib is then lol

Nah, now it requires a modified sauerbraten were the sourcecode has been changed so you hear footsteps, spawns, etc.
If that's not enough, you can always add a "scope" for zooming (where you can only see a certain area on your screen and the rest is just black), so it's more focused.

If that didn't helped, playermodes still can be changed, or just the easy way, their skin.

Still not preciated?
What about a weaponchange script?
After you fired a rifleround, you instantly change back to pistol, so it looks like your firing a rifleround with a pistol. This works pretty confusing for the opponent.

There are many more ways to make you have an advantage against any other player. These are just example wich I've seen or heard over the years.

I all hate those modifications. Sauerbraten should be played in it's default version when it comes to it's sourcecode and it's files (so no modified playerskin, map-cfgs, crosshair, skyboxes, textures, etc).
Only the ingame settings should be changed to get your advantage, nothing more...

Woow, I just asked about the players. And insted of Deathmatch I sould have written Instagib. The link has some names about several guys, like Honzik1, but when I play on the venice server there are several players who would blow Honzik away
IMO like LRonHubbard, SAW, Xs, HR1...

I personally think either saw or xs, cause I played the games with both of them when they've scored 170+ frags, while the rest of us were at 80, 90 at max...

you probably haven't seen the pros of this game play.
The best FFA/Insta players are found out through duels anyway.

Most of them are playing undercover when it comes to public, with random names, so it will be hard to identify them if you don't personally know them.

And for those guys to score 170+ frags in a single game (unless you meant for both of them combined) they would have to be cheating hard, since venice is a really tight map to be shooting and not be shot when its filled with people.

@Razgriz
It's called aiming m8, not cheating, and also requires excelent moving through the map.. it doesn't require much, just a little bit of talent for these kind of thing (useless talent anyway, just a waste of time).. anyway, if you were an ex quake player you would probably understand ;)
and btw, never heard of Sauerbraten pro player O.o
and btw2, I was 2nd in frags just 3 time in a whole 15 minute play games I played.. not bad for a cheater ;DD

@Nuclear
Your list lacks one player.. Trance.. I give him my vote, since it's not cool to vote myself (it would be too easy) ;)
the other guys you wrote are also very good players, but Trance is the hardest challenge

@Razgriz
my venice instagib personal best is 196.. while my pixles were crazy.. I had some stange black stuff all over my screen.. but I couldn't miss that night.. game after that I scored 190.. last goal is to go 200.. then I can stop playing :D

Venice is an outdated map wich isn't fitting the flow of sauerbraten anymore.
It doesn't requires skill to be good in venice.
It only requires camping (because venice is really a spawn-camp map) and for getting even more frags (bleh, hating it) some sourcecode modifications, scripst or just some file-modifications.

All players wich "are good" have modified their version to get an advantage against the default sauerbraten.
Of course this will get denied, because who wants to get putted a mark on his name as a modder wich abuses the set up of sauerbraten to earn more frags?

Anyways, like I said before, there is no best sauerbraten player.

You're probably right about no best player thing, but I really don\'t know anything about modified sauerbraten. I just insalled the game and play it :)

about camping.. it's useless against many players because you become easy target.. I prefer to jump around the place killing anyone in my path.. :) or to hold a position where many players tend to pass often..

it\'s also true that venice is becoming pretty much outdated... :S

If you can stand to play on the insta team venice server more than one or two games, you deserve a medal just for that anyway. :)

In a way, having the insta team venice server as a honeypot for all the people we don't really want to play against on ictf or regen servers is kind of nice.

To eihrul,
I agree you deserve a medal for that, so what about an offline statistics system in the next release, eihrul ;D?

To Xs,
You aren't that easy target if you go wait at a spawnpoint for some seconds, then move on to the next playerstart.
Also strafing close to a playerstart is a succesfull technic to avoid being shot when camping...

i find it harder to avoid being killed when strafing close to someone than keeping at a reasonable distance. some people have an unnatural skill of turning around really quick and kill you without even needing to make sure you are there.

As for the original question "who is best (in insta)":
There won't be any "best" player, it depends on many things: map, opponent, ping, mouse, breakfast, ...

I suggest you look at all the demos (starting 2008) on http://sauerleague.org/results/instagib.html and if you still think that question can have an answer: come here again :)

If you had been a Quake player, then you'd know exactly how to find your opponent, determine where his next move is, and use precise movement to obtain the best possible angle to fire upon that one spot. If you want to frag well on Cube2, you should try Quake 2. Freeware game w/ all the love and fixins ;p

The Railz Mod for quake 2 is almost exactly like instagib Rifles on Cube2. Except Quake 2 takes way more skill, by far. I have been a Quake 2 player for over 9 years and I have only played Cube2 for a week. Only took a couple days to get in a clan under another name, [MARVEL]Cable. ;)

Your absolutly right quake asks more skill than sauerbraten ever will do (if it continue it's gameplay like currently).

So, another reason why there is no best sauerbraten player: The gameplay is just that simple that it doesn't requires that much skill, only a bit of practice.

It seems that something like this is very subjective. Perhaps in order to quantify such a quality as "best" it would be necessary to create some sort of "obstacle course" map in which several contenders try to run through it as quickly as possible.

It would include shooting and running maneuvers, perhaps with players shooting at targets while someone in observer mode keeps score. I could develop such a map if there is enough interest.

Just a thought.

There already are some trickjumpmaps, for example...

precisely my point. Trickjumping alone won\'t cut it, though. some way to test shooting is needed.
