Having problems getting a server up

I'd like to host a LAN party, but I'm having trouble getting the server to cooperate.

It'll start up and say it's ready and that it's waiting for clients, but none of my other machines can connect. A port scan says the default ports (which I should be using) are closed.

This happens on two different machines, one running OS X, the other Ubuntu Linux. Can anyone help out?
