barely playable, it should be able to run with decent fps (18-30) with almost all settings set to low

Barely playable, even on low? What is the outlier? My MacBook has a 2 GHz proc with 4 GB of RAM and 256 MB of VRAM, but I still average 45-75 FPS with everything on high.

Uhm this may sound strange but:
Why not just try it out? Honestly it would have probably cost less time to just try it out ...

For optimizing the game performance try out this:

/vsync 0
/trilinear 0
/bilinear 0
/texreduce 12
/hudgun 0
/ragdoll 0
/blood 0

can't give you any guarantee that it will be better but it's worth a shot.

ofc turn off all GFX and use a low Resolution i think it should be fairly playable enough, a friend of mine played with an even shittier system for quite some time, and I know one who still is. Furthermore turn off all back round programs if possible, and keep a clean and maintained system with up to date drivers.

If I turn off the shaders and grass and all those other fancy effects my 7 year old PC can run Sauerbraten without a hitch. So I wouldn't see why you laptop wouldn't.

Either you were right and that did sound strange or you replied to the wrong person.
