Custom textures

by Lemmingz on 02/17/2002 06:15, 13 messages, last message: 12/11/2002 08:46, 1427 views, last view: 05/02/2024 02:16

I have made a few custom textures with The GIMP, but they don't show up.
I put them in a directory named after a map I was working on in the packages directory
How do I get them to show up?
Thanks

Good question.
Textures are defined in data/default_textures.cfg.
It says:
// unless a map has its own \\\"textures.cfg\\\", these will be used.
// don\\\'t ever modify, instead make your copy

Given the small size of the maps, I\\\'d assume the textures aren\\\'t stored in the maps, just referenced, i.e. you\\\'ll need to distribute your textures.cfg and your textures along with the map.
The question then is: How to link a modified default_textures.cfg to a self-written map?

Custom textures aren't implemented yet.

Is there a way around this like editing existing files? and saving the old ones in another folder?
and are those models q2 models?
It would be fun to change them all to homer simpson models and skins!

Yes, thems regular q2 models. Just overwrite the files in the directories with the apropriate names and file types (eg: foo.md2 -> tris.md2, bar.png -> skin.jpg). You could overwrite the textures, but you'll screw over all the other maps, so don't.

Well I guess I could make a copy of the /packages directory and re-name it "/packages_postal" and edit the textures while saveing the size and format. Then use it for my post office, and Mr Rogers neighborhood maps. This would give me the opportunity to add some cheerfull music with birds chirping in the background. :-)
You could start it with a shell script or mabey a sym-link.
If it works I'll make it available to all.

Symbolic links aren't something you find in windows. Shortcut handling is still somewhat mediocre. Just have some patience.

Well the new textures work However they somtimes show up reversed on the backside of things so I'll have to put the post office logos on outside walls only. Also it seems that the SP maps are hardcoded to the game so I had to re-name my map to one of the existing map names to do singleplayer mode.
This is a blast! mabey I'll do a map of where I work too!
The cube game is so small I just made an extra copy of it and called it /cube1 for the altered game. However to distribute the altered version all you need is the /packages directory.
Now I need to find some fitting music for a postal mod.

actually I replaced the default Ogre model with the Quake2 Homer model a long time ago, it\\\'s pretty funny seeing people scratching his butt all the time :D And I replaced ALL the other models too, the quad, health, green armor, ALL of it to old Quake2 models :D And the monsters to custom .md2\\\'s.
Pretty cool I must say.
The only thing it needs is being able to use .md2\\\'s as hud weapons, quake2 style. :)

#9: Someone should make a pack of models/skins/music

by Slabado on 11/05/2002 07:45

Wouldn\\\'t it be awesome if someone collected the best looking models, skins, skyboxs, sounds, music, etc and added them to a pack and distributed them!! That would be sweet. Someone do it. :)

It's surprising how much you can achieve without any form of modding, admitedly you cant change the models or skins but music and textures are easily changable on a map by map basis.
