Any OSX 10.3 users?

by baby~rabbit on 02/06/2010 11:04, 17 messages, last message: 02/14/2010 11:15, 1451 views, last view: 04/30/2024 09:32, closed on 02/14/2010 14:50

Do we still have any osx 10.3 users of sauerbraten?

If the answer it no, then we can consider moving to a more recent version of SDL and thus provide 64bit builds, but that will means that osx 10.4 will be the minimum required.

Any objections?

a question only: will 64bit builds do any better than the current general builds of sauer on windows? like increased performance etc?

The objective of moving to the modern version of SDL is primarily bug fixes and avoiding what have become deprecated apis.

64bit is a bonus, and I have not benchmarked it - in truth it will only be available in snow leopard or better, at that point you have a relatively modern mac and the most likely thing holding back performance is the graphics card.

that means no 64bit bins for windows users? the whole point is to update the SDL for better performance on macs?

i don't get it >.<

anyway, bug fixes are welcome, so even if we get nothing new on windows, its still better to know that there are fewer bugs then before >.>

It's mac users getting revenge on Windows users only providing Windows binaries of Sauerbraten mods by only providing Mac binaries of Sauerbraten with updated SDL :P

I only speak for development/support of the OSX side, and this issue of backward compatibility and dropping support of 10.3 users only affects mac users xD

#6: Yeah, But Go Ahead

Yeah, I have two computers running Mac OS X 10.3.9, but they probably won't be able to run the next version anyway. One of them is a 400 MHz Cube Mac desktop (I swear, it's the name of the computer!) and crashes on Sauer launch unless I lower every setting, so I just use Cube 1, and the other is an iBook G4 laptop from circa '04. It runs Sauer fine but I don't use it often anyway. Even if I can't upgrade and there won't be anyone online, I'll still use it for editing offline.
Summary: I have two 10.3 Macs but they don't run Sauer fast enough for me to care. Go ahead.

Fine with me, too. I have a 1 and a half year old iMac, pretty average computer running the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.2 etc.

So yeah, also here, go ahead.

No, I do not use 10.3 anymore, I have since upgraded to 10.4. So as long as I can at least compile it on a PowerPC G4 on 10.4.11 I will be happy. :)

PS who remembers me?

Could you make the player's view bank when you rub the magic mouse wiv two fingers? Then I MIGHT just get a mac.

When you say bank, you mean that if I scroll up it's as if I just moved my mouse to the left? What's the point? Or was that whole post a joke?

No I mean when you rub the magic mouse left with two fingers, he leans left, and if you rub the magic mouse right with two fingers, he leans right.

Go take this up with the SDL team, multifinger gestures, i.e. multitouch is on the roadmap, but there is no timeline: http://wiki.libsdl.org/moin.cgi/Roadmap#Multi-touch_Input

Yeah, like SDL 2.0 has been on the agenda.. for, like, forever.

Lean? Does Sauer even *allow* leaning? Do you mean his field of vision tilts?

There is no leaning, no. (One might argue that "it's not balanced for lean", but I probably shouldn't say that. ;))

You can, however, observe the effects of the variable maxroll, do some quick source hacking to roll on command, and pretend you're leaning. :P

Since no one whimpered about the loss of 10.3 and now the thread is totally off topic, we might as well close it.
