How did Mr. Van Oortmerssen get Cube so tiny?

Hello all. As some of you may know, I have created a Cube mod caled Newcube, and looking back on it to the earliest alpha I could find, the zip file of that alpha is 31 megabytes!! When I look at the size of the Cube 2002 release, I am confused - even though it has far more content than this extremely early Newcube branch, the zip file is only NINE Megabytes!! How on Earth did Mr. Van Oortmerssen get all those maps, 256 textures, lotso models, and all those WAV format sound effects so small? Moreover, how come this extremely early version of Newcube, with half a many textures, only a couple of maps, most of the models deleted and no music, is so large? How could I go about making the contents of the file smaller? The files are obviously very inneficient. What's going on?

#1: Optimizations

I don't know about how this exactly works in Cube, but in Sauerbraten there are a few ways to shrink maps' file sizes:
* use a higher lightprecision value (ESC>editing..>light) and using a quick calclight (also shown there).
* remipping (remip command)
* ESC>editing..>mapop>optimize geometry
Also, check for metadata. This can increase filesize by a small amount, but it's worth deleting for privacy and to keep from annoying thumbs.db files cropping up everywhere.
On another topic: why make a whole new thread for this? Why not a) Google it, b) search the forums and post anything relevant here, and c) post this in the thread you already made.

Last time I glanced at newcube I saw you were including 33Mb of unnecessary windows temporary build files in src/vcpp .... So do a sanity check on your directory sizes
