Training Mission: Cube 101 release (and others)

by spentron-peanutbutter on 07/01/2003 08:05, 9 messages, last message: 07/28/2003 22:44, 1302 views, last view: 04/24/2024 20:48

I realized my maps aren't generally good for a first-time player to jump into, so I made a level that introduces Cube's monsters and weapons one by one, and then tests what you have learned. Still plenty of action for the regulars.

Also, with the proliferation of new threads, decided this was a good time to point out my singleplayer mappage that may have been buried in the "general thread" ... see if you missed anything at the above link ...

Anyone actually find the secret level?

Thanks Pat.

I added the following bit on one of my pages: "Cube is a bright game. If the colors appear too saturated
(excessive), your settings are too dark (paradoxically)."

I've seen too-dark screenshots for most other games but it's usually obvious because you're looking at a black rectangle, or close to it. But Cube being a brighter game, you can get a dark coloration and it not be so clear what's going on. The *color* will appear too bright and exaggerated when actually the white level is too low because the settings are too dark. I also use a highish gamma in-game but there are brighter monitors and it did change when I got a newer one. I tried a LCD - awful color even though very vivid on some other stuff.

Any insight? ... currently adding notes or avoiding all strong colors are the only ways to try and make sure things look right.

Sounds like more of a problem with contrast than brightness.

Any nonlinearity of display response will tend to change the balance of color signals because the component color signals are modified individually. The questions here are 1) do I use accurate settings and 2) is there any predictable pattern of common inaccuracies to watch out for -- probably not, unlike the analogous case in audio.

But my point was that sometimes the error may not be obvious as to the cause even that there is an error, resulting in it not being fixed. I don't think I can do much about it though.

I use a program to calibrate my monitor to some sort of standard. It's an arbitrary standard they made up, but it's something.

And this would be? ... however this does less good if everyone else sets theirs different.

Example of dark screens from QExpo:

Looked like cryptic writings on obsidian at first, except the last shot ... for web pages, maybe I should always include a shot of the darkest spot, that might do it ;) .

Finding myself with too much time on my hands, was making great progress on a new level.

A few tips: backup often. If you can get into your crashed computer in safe mode before reformatting the hard drive, be sure to get everything, but don't get so involved getting everything that you don't amke multiple copies of multiple versions on multiple disks of that super-valuble file. Write protect floppies, and don't try to copy them with your computer still screwed up.

I don't know if I will redo (better) or if I can't face it. It was cool, I saw it ;-/ .

New system running good so far though, I see 3deep comes with Asus mobo's. Also, new config on the way, Notepad's fine in 16 color mode ;-0 . I'll also be catching up on the latest stuff.

Figured out how to deal with rebuilding the lost level -- change a whole lot of stuff. Rebuilding it the "same" seemed too much like work.

A new version of my autoexec.cfg is up. Lots of stuff for those who like mousewheel editing, and some other things too. See the General Thread for more info or go directly ...
