Coop mapping session

Hi all! Would anyone be interested in a serious coop edit mapping session - that is one that should end with a playable map? I'd like to either take part in such session or organize one myself.

Ummm, heres some info you might find helpful.

1. Play in-game, and talk to people to make friends who are serious about map making.

2. Here are some names of people who are serious that i talk to: HELL-O, MasterEdit, SWATLAMMA, SirAlex,
Sub-Zero. there are more, but i can't remember their names.

3. You start a map that you want to be made, start by yourself and once it has an "outline" then pre-view it to other people to see if they will help you.

4. Get some of your real life friends to play Sauer, and have them get on at a certan time to help you with the map making.

Thanks for your tips, Jice(?) ! I'll try to socialize in-game, although I don't want to piss people off by spamming the game with messages when I should be playing :-)

Ad 3) - I actually don't have an idea right now. I used to make maps for OpenArena and now I just wanted to try a more professional approach to making maps - that is plan everything in detail with a bunch of people and then cooperate to make that plan happen. It may or may not work, but sauerbraten's coop editing seems suitable for this approach. All depends on the number of interested people now.

Lots of people may be interested depending on the name and how it look... however, watch out for some people, some people mess up maps just because they can...

And actually my alias is
[Ice]Sub-Zero|L, but i posted it up here as Sub-Zero.

All the best.

You'll find that many people will want to help you make a map. Not even 15% of them tell the truth of their skills, and even less have some decent mapping experience to make cool stuff. If you make friends with people who know how to map, they will help you more than would people that have some mapping experience but all they want is to add a thing or two and want their name credited in the front page >.>

I'm somewhat interested, but I don't think you have the right approach. Maybe it should be more like, "Do you have a proof-of-skill map to show me?" then letting them into a locked server. It's not really a good idea to take their word for something, because people often overrate themselves (especially "computer people" who are really priests of Microsoft). If people have real skill, then they will send you a map/screenshot/mod they made. But people with skill, chances are, work alone. Some people who would likely be WILLING to help and have amazing skill are:

Dessilu (currently in [RAW] clan)
Luc (also in [RAW] clan, the two are friends)
HELL-O (as stated before)

I'm somewhat good, with lighting/coloring effects, but have yet to learn the ropes of scripting, mapmodels, and some other stuff.

Yeah, you are talking right out of my mind. I don\'t want to sound picky, but I definitely don\'t want to accept everyone who\'s interested. On the other hand, real pros don\'t do graphics for an open\'source project, right? :-)

It\'s true that a lot of people like to work alone, but that\'s not how it works in real life and these people then won\'t have any experience from working in a team. I have realized this recently because of a few group projects that we were supposed to do at my university. So, as I mentioned before - this should be considered an opportunity to try to do things differently, in a group of people.

Also, to encourage noobs - don't take me wrong. If you want to learn something, you're also welcome to join, but you must be open to learning new things and expect to be criticised. Also, at least some artistic skills and aesthetic eye are highly appreciated.

I do graphics for a living (a profession, if you will), which I suspect makes me a 'pro'. And yet I toss time to various open source projects all the time.

Don't expect much, and you will be surprised. Be humble and watchful and you'll see what you didn't expect. Be honest and artists will respond (be a douche and they'll find a way to destroy your work).

Remember, college is a world unto itself, that has at best a tenuous connection to the real world.

Ok, I admit - you got me there :-D I don't suppose, you'd help out?

And, BTW, I'll do my best to not be a douche :-)

Yeah, I concur with Tentus on the pro-graphics thing. Many pros use open source as a launchpad or testing zone. About the coop thing: I definitely have artistic skill and an aesthetic taste, just not for Sauerbraten. If you'd like to know my own actual opinion, it's this: my work is sadistically bad. It's not that I can't do the actual editing, it's that I come up short when I want a specific concept. I can't think of anything to actually DO. But I'd be glad to help out at your coop server. What is it going to be?

I of course even use open source as my starting... Though I am not a pro yet, you have to understand, at my age level, with all the things I have to to and the small window of time to make things (mostly animations) with, its understandible why. However, the only open sourcing I have done so far is trying to add things to cube.

All the best.
