Cube Population

About how many people play Cube 2 and other cube engine games? I'm trying to convince my friends to play with me.

Take a look on the server browsers and find out for yourself! Why don't you proceed to look on the servers of mainstream proprietary games to give yourself an idea?

Nixot, not just does that give you only the population that plays multiplayer, it is much harder then the easy way.

By looking at the Sourceforge site, you can actually see how many have downloaded it.

From Sourceforge:

There have been 129,517 downloads of Sauerbraten Trooper Edition for Windows as of the time this message is posted.

There have been 39,431 downloads of
Sauerbraten Trooper Edition for Linux
as of the time this message is posted.

There have been 55,305 downloads of Sauerbraten Trooper Edition for Mac OS as of the time this message is posted.

There have been 224,253 downloads of Sauerbraten Trooper Edition from Sourceforge at the time this message is posted.

The most popular edition was Sauerbraten CTF Edition with 538,451 total downloads from sourceforge.

There have been 2,386,497 downloads of the various versions, patches and distributions of Sauerbraten.

I don't know if this site links to the Sourceforge download for sure or not. If not, there could be many more.

Since you're using it to convince your friends, something like "Over 2.3 million people have downloaded editions of Sauerbraten" should work fine.

additionally copies that have been distributed by the built in package managers of linux (and BSD) distributions aren't counted here

The Debian page explains how to read these.

Also you can't assume the 2.3 Million is unique downloads. How many are return customers for a new version, or return customers who just got a new PC so have to redownload?

Being extremely conservative and saying 1/5th is unique means about 100,000 individual clients out there.

TomCat, that's why I said "There have been x downloads", not "x people have downloaded". :)

Oops, post got cut short. the "Over 2.3 million people" was suggesting Nixot tell a useful yet barely plausible thing to his friends to get them to play (Politician style).

Download numbers are useless, what's really interesting is the number of people that play at a given time. For that, just check out the server browser.
