Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

Is this the most underrated game/open-source engine ever?

Yes, it is.

It's got pretty much everything you could ask for in an arena shooter, it's highly customisable, and it's free!

And yet there's still more people editing the old versions of Quake than there are this game - it's a bloody travesty!

Who's with me?

I certainly intend to - and I advise all others to do the same!

An idea to get around cube 2's awesomeness is to try to feauture it in a magazine, such as Pc Gamer or Gameinformer.

however, sauer is still updating... new mod's are being made for it, and new releses are made every now and again... so for it to be in a magazine, it first needs to be finished compleatly, and the only mod's allowed to have are new maps and scripts... however if you look at quadropolis, you see new mod's and maps at least every two days.... heres a link to quad: http://www.quadropolis.us/

Sauer will never end (or at least that's what most people hope to). Each release takes about a year or more to come, yet mods and maps are optional, since few of them will ever make it into the pack (I hate the map mechanic, how did that one make it in btw?)

Here in greece it was published around 2 and a half years ago, in a magazine named PC World. I think it was early ctf edition, and as i was looking for games my eyes stumbled upon this, and from that time i'm hooked hard. Same thing that will happen with others if they get the chance to see it in a mag :D

I've seen it several times in one particular mag in Australia. Ok, so it wasnt a full review, but its been on their coverdisc two or three times and they looked at it in an open source article they did. I personally don't know if it is better or worse for Sauer to attract attention - if too many people know about it it'll just lose its magic, then there'll be console ports and each new release will only add more brown textures and extra bloom effects (thats my doomsday prophecy, by the way).

More people means more servers. more people means more contributors. more people "probably" means growth. Or clutter. there are many sides to that.. but i at least don't think that more attention means the doomsday of sauer, be optimistic :]

Cube is very addicting and awesome, someone needs to contact microsoft and put it on the xbox live arcade, since you can get a pluggable mini keyboard in a xbox controller that would make it possible to edit on the game.

Granted, people will more likly play... However you have to understand, not everyone wants to play a game that still has a long way to go till its "good enough". and In most mag's they publish finished games...

let's quickly take a look...
xbox
* can't use OpenGL
* uses directX

cube
* uses OpenGL
* what's this directX you speak off?

so have fun with the porting!

^ lol
and also, in hindsight, I don't think a console player would have time or attention span to do any mapmaking. Consoles are a casual experience, to sit down and get straight into the action. This mindset has been carried by some into our PC realm. That would be my fear - that Sauer loses what makes it unique to such an "Oh cool open source shootar" mindset. I guess this fear is unwarranted, because as long as edit mode continues to be expanded it should be ok.

In all honesty though, please dont turn up the bloom to how it was in assassin edition.

sub-zero, i'm sorry but i find your comments rather idiotic. this game isn't beta, its open-source!! and to a lot of people it is "good enough"

Well, wake... Its good to have your own mind so youi may speak... However if you re-read my post, I plainly put it in quoatation marks, meaning that it is not my words, I am quoting from someone else. However I love the game. And I never said it was beta, I just said that it is still being made better, with the more mods and idea added. All in all you have to understand I am saying that because it keeps on being updated and whatnot, the chances of it ending up in a mag or in the news is a bit more slim then if you were to just pay of a spot in a newspaper for it to be posted... See my point? I am not denouncing cube at all, I am just saying that its not as easy to be posted unless someone tells people about it.

And speaking of which, heres an idea for anyong who is working in a store that sells games (gamestop, walmart, ect) when you see someone buying a game, tell them about Sauerbraten cube, and give them a little tab of paper so they can get this site and download it.

2 plus 7 = 9
