Syntensity Launches Open Beta, Intensity Engine 1.0

by kripken on 10/02/2009 20:25, 36 messages, last message: 12/27/2009 20:57, 6815 views, last view: 05/14/2024 21:54

As the title says, Syntensity launched its open beta today, and the Intensity Engine had a 1.0 release.

For those unfamiliar with the two:

The Intensity Engine is an open source platform for games, that builds upon Cube 2/Sauerbraten (and a lot of other open source code), adding a flexible and powerful scripting API, as well as other features. The API lets you make all sorts of 3D multiplayer games and easily add new features to existing ones.

Syntensity is a project using the Intensity Engine, whose goal is to be a world of games that people can not only play in, but also mod. All the content on Syntensity will be moddable: If you can play it, you can mod it.

Currently Syntensity has one complete playable game (an insta ctf map). It still needs some polish, but part of the potential of the engine can already be seen in it. Also, we are already working on more nice content for you to see.

How can I enter editmode in the game? When I start an asset on a server, connect to it and press e or F1, it says "You are not authorized to enter editmode", and I didn't find out any setmaster-like commands that work.

@BuRnItDoWn: This is very similar to the release candidate from last week, just some minor fixes here and there.

@Redon:

You can only enter edit mode for maps whose assets you are an owner of. You can make a clone of an existing asset, which is a copy that you then own.

To do that, make a clone of a map asset, then make an activity for it and run it - similar to the process described here: http://sites.google.com/a/syntensity.com/wiki/creating/creat , but starting with cloning an asset *other* than emptymap. You should then be able to edit.

If you still can't, then I guess there's a bug - tell me what map/asset you are trying to edit, and I will check it.

#6: Known Issues

by kripken on 10/03/2009 11:02

There is now a wiki page about known issues and bugs,

Engine-related bugs are tracked in more detail here:

#8: Clarifications

by kripken on 10/03/2009 21:08

Just to clarify something: The map creation process is different in this engine than in Sauer. Stuff like starting a new map, adding entities to a map, etc., are different. This is because of the new features in this engine.

The Syntensity wiki's section on content creation has a lot of useful info about that:

I've noticed that some blodd appears when you shoot randomly, even if you don't hit an opponent.

@Younes:

I am aware of a bug where if you shoot the automatic cannons, there is a blood effect. Did you see it there, or in some other place?

I know that in the binaries that were released a week or two ago, you'd get a blood effect in the air if you shot at the jumppads. Maybe that's what he's talking about.

#14: Testing new map

by kripken on 10/12/2009 20:03

We are almost finished with the first update. This will include:

* New weapons, including homing missiles, and a sniper gun that allows headshots.

* New, bigger CTF map.

* Various minor improvements like HUD notifications.

The binary builds will be out fairly soon. Meanwhile we are doing testing, which you are welcome to join. To do so, you need to build the latest source. Then after logging in to the master, do a 'manual connect' to the testing server, which is www.syntensity.com, port 10002.

Notes:

1. Rockets and homing missiles don't work correctly in firstperson at the moment (use thirdperson for them).

2. You can only test the homing missiles if you have other players to shoot at.

#15: 1.0.1 with new stuff

by kripken on 10/14/2009 16:59

Syntensity has just released its first update, 1.0.1, with:

* Homing missiles, that chase their target
* Headshots with the sniper gun (kills with 1 shot. Otherwise you need 3 sniper gun shots)
* Rockets
* Shotgun
* Initial version of hudmodel and firstperson support
* New and bigger CTF map
* HUD info (radar, health, etc.)
* Various stuff like nicer sound effects, animations, etc.

You can see some of this in the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GSi3X5hCdw

or better yet, download and run the latest version for yourself:

http://www.syntensity.com/toplevel/download/

(If you haven't already signed up for Syntensity, you need to do so, which takes just a few seconds. See the links on the main page.)

Notes:

1. If you are copying the new version into an existing directory with the old version, you will *NOT* get the new keybindings (see next note). It is simplest to just unpack the new download into a new directory. (Or, you can delete syntensity/client/config.cfg, which will then be created from scratch the next time the client is run, and you will get the new keybindings and so forth.)

2. Change weapons with 1-4, or cycle by pressing the middle mouse button. H shows a little help. You can of course change the keybindings using sauer's usual binding commands.

3. The homing missiles can only be shot if you are locked on a target (another player). The lock remains for a short while after your crosshair is no longer over the target (a notification is shown at the top of the HUD).

4. The rockets are not the same as sauer rockets - they are slightly affected by gravity. This means that to shoot at a very far-off target, you will need to aim a little above it (and some trial and error).

5. This is an early release, we will probably adjust the weapon strengths, ranges, etc., depending on feedback (we can distribute those updates between releases). So, let us know what you think needs changing.

Have fun,
kripken

#16: 1.0.2

by kripken on 10/26/2009 10:34

Syntensity is now at 1.0.2, and has

* A lobby with portals to the games: http://www.syntensity.com/static/screenshot_lobby.jpg (walk into them to teleport into the games).
* An interactive tutorial (in the lobby, press 'H').
* Binary build for Windows, and .debs for 32/64-bit Ubuntu 9.04/9.10.

Current games are:

* 4-weapon CTF in big map
* Insta CTF in small map
* Sketch world (drawing)

I am doing my best to get a Mac port, by trying to find someone to help with it. It shouldn't be much work, but it does require someone that knows OS X development, which I myself do not (I don't even own a Mac).

#19: Cutscenes

by kripken on 10/30/2009 16:03

Cutscenes are now possible (which WayneX and others asked for):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYeFS747HdM

Cutscenes can be written in scripts, so you can have different ones in each map.
