I was on coop yesterday, UP Clan Server,, and we were discussing the fact that I had and old version of the mX headquarters that we were on. Zero was saying that he couldn't show us the new HQ after I asked, and a new map was started, and after typing a message about the fact that it was good that I hadn't posted the map on Quadropolis I looked up and saw that I was specced. Before I could say anything I was kicked. Is this repeated behavior of the server, or was it just this one time? Also, could there be legel repercussions if I putthe map on Quadropolis? I wouldn't take credit, and would put it under one of the liscenses.

the question was, can mX attempt to sue me/get me in trouble with the law if I post the map on quadropolis.

Depends on who holds the rights and which country they're in.
If you don't hold the rights, then technically, probably. (I can't say yes because I'm only familiar with US copyright law.)

You can certainly post it, but if you don't have the rights to, it'll be deleted, and nobody will like you. :)

(Of course, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice.)

Well, I wasn't going ro take credit, and I was going to say that I found it on Coop- Edit, like I did. I'd just like to share it because it's really well done.

Legally, it's not your to share. Unless transferred, distribution rights remain with the holder.

But like I said, I'm referring to US law. If the creator isn't a US citizen, you'll have to refer to local copyright laws.
(Actually, I'm not too sure about this--anyone know if it's citizenship that defines which law applies? For example, would a German painting in the US have German copyright law apply?)

Thanks for the help. I really was expecting that, though.

I think if a german person made Something it still fits under our law that we cannot say its ours nor do we hold any rights to do anything with it... I could be wrong about that, but I believe its not the "finders/keepers" rule when it comes to copyrighted stuff... But considering its most likly not copyrighted yet, it is legal to post it. Esp. if its unfinished. If it is finished but not released yet that fits under what is known as "Bootleg" and thus you can be sued for it and it is illegal so if the police or FBI found out about it it could be classified as a "fed" offence, even if the person is from China. Although the best idea is to not post it, you could ask them if it is finished or if they have a copyright on it.

#8: Publishing Third-Party Material

by MeatROme on 09/23/2009 06:10, refers to #7

Common decency at least should stop anybody from publishing stuff they didn't create themselves;
as long as you haven't been granted permission by the original author you should simply assume anything you come across to be copyrighted.

He's right: at least as far as art is concerned, the rule is "copyright and ALL RIGHTS RESERVED" unless stated otherwise (All Rights Reserved means that distribution, performance, creation of derivative works, etc are all off limits without author permission). As of August 2000 all the countries in Buenos Aires Convention do not need to state copyright for it to be in effect, as far as I remember.

In a nutshell:
1. If you didn't make it, don't post it.
2. It's not yours to distribute.
3. If you do you're a douche and/or in danger of copyright violation.
