"Don't unbalance teams" when trying to balance

by meriton on 09/13/2009 16:21, 4 messages, last message: 10/22/2009 23:29, 1260 views, last view: 04/18/2024 08:55

There is a server side script on a server I occasionally play on - sadly I don't remember which one - that refuses a request to change teams while writing "Don't unbalance teams".

Unfortunately, that can also happen if one attempts to join the badly losing, much smaller team.

For instance, yesterday playing iCTF, our team was ahead 6 - 0, had two more members than the other team, and I was bored escorting our flag carrier because nobody ever shot at them. Trying to bite the bullet, I attempted to switch teams, only to be told "Don't unbalance teams".

Could this script please be fixed?

Does anybody know any work-arounds?

You could disconnect, then reload the server, but that's really inconvenient.

That was most likely the PSL server.
I'll pass the problem to WahnFred, the server mod engineer.

>>our team was ahead 6 - 0, had two more members than the other team <<

can`t be PSL, though the message is just like the one from PSL. On PSL you can switch teams in this case.

regarding any balance mechanism: the problem - unfortunately - is rather the peoples behaviour, not the server.

we included the mechanism after we realized that there are at least one or two, sometimes even way more people who disconnect during a game or even worse, switch to the winning team when they are losing. even now they still do. therefore, on PSL you can only switch to the smaller team if your team are two people more.

there are other "solutions", and just like ours theay all have their disadvantage. the "autobalance" (swithing players to the other team) other servers have can grind your gears if you did a lot for your team to make it win and in the last minute you get switched to the other and appear to be one of the losers... a balance based on the accuracy makes no sense , as most of the good players play iCTF by fragging but not by going for the flag. just yesterday is saw a team loosing that had the 4 best fraggers, and they lost 6-1. the mechanism would have worked the wrong way. and balancing just by how many flags a team has makes it senseless: then every game would end a tie or close to it. therewould be no incentive anymore to really try to win.

therefore: my apology to all who try to help the game, but the huge amount of people don't giving much about it and having only their own things in their mind, force us to have one of the mechanisms. we chose this one.

It probably was another server. I recall it was not one of my usual haunts like the PSL server, but I don't remember which server it was.

In any case, I never felt restricted in balancing on PSL, so I think you are doing a good job.
