sound gets bad after 5 min of play

I really like the game but after about 5 minuites of play the sound gets very choppy and cuts out a lot. the game also starts to lag a little more. But after I quit the game and restat it everything is fine again for another 5 minuites
How do I fix it?
using Red Hat 7.1 with nvidia driver 2313 ,sdl-1.2.3-5, sdl_image-1.2.1-3, sdl_mixer-1.2.2-3 and smpeg-0.4.4-7
Am I missing something?
