Random Suggestions

Hello,
I do think Sauerbraten is an excellent game, and the editing tool is wonderful, but there are some things that might need to be added. These aren't things you did wrong, mainly things or features that could be added.

I will not go over-the-top with different weapon functions, etc., as Sauerbraten is popular for being the simple game it is.

I am not expecting these to come into the next version right away or anything, just make some suggestions. If I posted this in the wrong thread/forum, sorry.

Here goes:

- Explosive barrels in multiplayer like the ones in the campaigns

- Actual ladders. Yes, I know there is a way to make ladders, and they look great in Egypt-themed maps, but sometimes it just needs one that goes STRAIGHT up, not slanted, and looks a lot thinner and rounder. I know that you can jump very high, and usually there is no need for ladders because of jumppads, etc., but it would be nice.

- Monsters in multiplayer. (Not a big one, but could be cool)

- Maybe snow, or different kinds of rain. I know there is now a particle which looks like rain, but maybe weather conditions, as weather conditions or something, not as particles, (Not sure how this would work).

- Settings for higher/lower gravity/motion, etc. Just one for fun in different free servers.

- Lifts in multiplayer. I don't know how it works in singleplayer, but it would be cool.

- "Usable" ents. I don't know if this would work in sauerbraten, but it is kind of like the ladders, buttons you could press to do stuff in multiplayer, etc.

- Use right click for zoom instead of jump. I don't know if many people actually use the right click for the jump, but I'm sure they could use space as well, and use right click for zooming instead. The normal weapons don't need zooming, but just the rifle with a scope would be nice, not just looking more forward, but an actual scope, it would still be simple.

- Maybe more monsters on singleplayers, like a huge boss or something.

- Not that sauerbraten doesn't have enough weapons, but more would never harm. Not that this one is urgent, and I don't have a lot of suggestions for weapons anyway, but maybe stuff like a flamethrower or stuff with lasers.

These are just some suggestions, I don't necessarily expect them to be in the game any time soon, but make your own, and, well, that's it.

PS: I know this isn't the right place to ask, but ow do you make a screencast? PLEASE don't give me the link to the docs or something with an annoyed face, is it that hard to type thatever the command is?

THANKS

100% of these have been discussed or implemented, and those that haven't probably won't make it into Cube 2 any time soon, if ever. Try searching.

I have a right-click-zoom in my autoexec.cfg which works well for me:

bind "MOUSE2" zooma
"zooma" = [
fov 30
sensitivity 4
onrelease [
fov 100
sensitivity 7
]
]

As far as I know, a scope overlay can't be done in Cubescript. You'll need to mod the source. (See overlays like the HUD, crosshair, or damage overlay for how to do this.)

Cube 2 implements demo recording, which can only be played back in Cube 2. All of it is laid out in the documentation, which should have been your first place to look. Please try to help yourself first.

Y'know, I hate saying it all the time, but perhaps you should try Blood Frontier; 90% of the things mentioned here that aren't in Cube 2 are in that.

Yep yep sorry sorry, for some reason I had the feeling people would say this (not saying its a bad thing), I should have learnt from last time I posted something like this. oh yeah, I already have BloodFrontier, but never seem to see anyone online, and gameplaywise I prefer sauerbraten (well except for anything that ISN'T insta).

Anyway, if I had suggestions, where would I put them?

/movie

"PLEASE don't give me the link to the docs or something with an annoyed face, is it that hard to type whatever the command is?"

Urm, ok - though you might want to read the docs to see how to use the command and configure the various options...

I'm kind of new to the forums, I only ever read the latest ones, and when I google anything hardly anything comes up, because it's not a too popular game.

I know I posted this in the wrong place or something, so where would I post suggestions?

Thanks for the binding tip by the way!

#7: Ideas

by [Enzo]Louis on 07/04/2009 23:20

I think blood frontier and Sauerbraten should just be made into one game. They are both great but would be even better together.

Ideas for Sauerbraten:
-I still like the idea of changing gravity
-The sniper needs to be able to zoom in farther
-I think instead of a grenade thrower or whatever you should throw grenades with you hands
-And I also think bots should use way points

why merge the two completely different games? thats like mixing Milk with Orange Juice- it just doesn't work. Blood frontier is a Sci-fi game with slower gameplay, and Sauer is a speed-fragging quake-like game. Why take the risk when they're already so good on their own?

Indeed. Plus, being seperate allows us to do things with the engine you'll never see in Sauerbraten because the two projects have different evolutionary philosophies. Tweak a couple of settings and you can play the game like it was Sauerbraten (heck, you can even load your maps from there too).

#11: Some Polish

I think Sauerbraten menus or those things at the end of games or when you press tab should be a little different. The design in itself is excellent, it looks visually very good. However, I think it should showcase the scores of players rather than just the names and the ping. it should have something like frags, deaths, maybe captures in ctf modes. Maybe even some kind of point system, and then the players are ranked per how many points in the game per team.

I think also that the editing mode should be just a tad more visual, less commands, or the same, but more stuff in the menu. It is already kind of cluttered, but I think there should be some kind of thing where you can access everyhting with editing, like textures without pressing f2, or some way of doing particles without having to type /newent and then scrolling around. Maybe even some kind of option menu for selections you make, kind of like a right click, to change size of stuff more specifically than scrolling.

#12: Sauer-speific maps

by fispaul on 07/08/2009 17:20

I am not a very good mapper, and I am not criticizing other mappers in any way, but I think there should be more Sauer-specific maps. maps that fit to the fact that you run at 30 miles per hour and jump over 10 metres. Maps with more platforms, more secrets, stuff you can stand on.

See, even though maps like metl4 are fun to play on, when you concentrate you notice you are actually slowing down at every corner and jumping into or nearly into walls then turning, very rough.

Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the maps in Sauer, but even one ofmyavorite maps, dust2 for example, has a lot of things that kind of ruin it from being a good Sauer map. I like it, and lots of similar deathmatch maps, but obvious noclips (the red ones) I think should not be in maps, like in Dock, or dust2. Sauer seems to me like a game where there could be a lot of trick jumps and secrets, faster ways to get to places with weapon jumps etc. Reissen used to be the perfect example of this, but the creator removed the platform where most pros would jump on the capture the flag quicker, and I miss that. Maps like in Crash bandicoot somehow seem to fit Sauer's gameplay style.

They can still look good, or how they want to, but with more places to go. If you want players not go somewhere, instead of a clip i think you could change the scale of the map to suit Sauer's gameplay. Of course, this is impossible for maps already made, and I'm not saying they need to go, they still are excellent maps, but this is for what kind of maps Sauer needs. Also for singleplayer Crash=Bandicoot maps seem awfully fitting. And speaking of scale, a map like the giant kitchen map in counterstrike would be very fitting, with sercet passageways but many things you can jump on to get to places high.
