Idea: game type with classes and no items

Contrary to what some may think given the title, this idea is not intended to slow the game down into some tactical shooter - actually it is quite the opposite. Id like to keep the intensity of insta games, but combined with the diverse game play that multiple weapons give.

What I like most about insta is that you dont gather any items. It is just action all the time. But what I dont like about it is that only one weapon is used, which effectively avoids any rock-paper-scissors scenario that you will encounter in a game where multiple weapons are used.

To remedy this, why not make some kind of classes? They could either be predefined or custom. You choose one or two weapons to spawn with, and your health, armor and ammunition is regenerative, which eliminates the need of items but still forces you to withdraw to safety if you take too much damage. The classes could be predefined, for example: close-quarters class with shotgun + machine gun, explosives class with grenade- and rocket launcher, long-range class with pistol + rifle. Alternatively, you could freely select two weapons with no restricted combinations, which is what I would prefer.

So if you havent taken any damage for, lets say, 5-10 seconds your health and armor begins to regenerate automatically in an appropriate pace. And if you havent fired your weapon in a few seconds, the ammunition starts regenerating. Careful balancing is of course needed here.

This classes-style game type could of course be combined with team deathmatch, capture, CTF and protect just like insta.

I think a game type like this would fit nicely with the current Sauerbraten gameplay, and wouldnt require an insurmountable amount of effort to implement. Anyways, what do you think?

there is already a mode called efficiency where you start with armor and ammo, with no items. it's pretty close to what you describe in the first two paragraphs.

Or even like Blood Frontier, minus the class selection. Come to think of it though, Acord had expressed an interest in implementing something like that.

Efficiency mode is not the same thing. There is no regeneration and you dont have to stick with a choice of weaponry.

quite true, your idea is that we won't need "pick-ups" anymore, and we don't have to die in order for our ammo or healt to come back as full. i like the idea.

A very simple implementation of this idea is now available in Blood Frontier's SVN (revision 3633) as the mutator "arena".
