So it seems the format directory has changed in trooper

so it seems the directory for sauerbatan has changed, and i would like to get familiar with it.

a few questions to begin the topic.

what is the equivalency of the packages/base/ directory? as in, where can i store new downloaded maps?

what about importing custom textures? would i do it through a cfg file and create a folder for them? if so, where are these files stored?

also, i never fully understood the formating as far as how scale from a jpeg or png is translated into sauer, as well as what an ideal resolution for textures in sauer would be?

some of this information might have been right under my nose, but i looked pretty extensively and couldnt find anything except stuff that appears to be outdated. anyway who can drop some knowlage, i would apperciate it greatly

/base is still /base. I assume you're on Vista? It can sometimes change where stuff goes.

Textures should be a power of 2 (128x128, 256x256, 512x512, etc). The size really depends on what you're using it for. You can always scale a texture as well (ie, a texture that is intended to be only seen at a great distance might be scaled up, whereas a very fine detail might need to be scaled down)

im on mac OSX 10.5, and there is no base folder or even packages that i can find—everything seems to be organized quite differently.

thanks for the texture info. i assume that the "power of 2" dimensions relates to pixel increments.

i am pretty sure that you can just look for "packages" "base" and then look for the files. if not then just look around it, it'll show up soon :)

On osx - run the launcher, and hit the "show user files" button... this is where you put your packages etc (Initially it probably is empty except for only your config.cfg)

The 'standard' set of packages are hidden within the actual sauerbraten application, consider them read-only, so don't put your files in there!

nope. not anywhere. the game runs fine, and i have custom maps that i am working on that load fine in game, but cannot be found outside that. this is trooper not ctf ed. the folders that appear in the "sourcecode" folder are:

enet
engine
fpsgame
include
lib
shared
vcpp
xcode

then there is a readme file, and another file called "makefile"

in the folders there are no additional directories within them that contain "base" or packages"

perhaps this is a bug for the mac version? perhaps i should report it in that thread. but the game runs fine, its just organized differently it seems.

Right click the sauerbraten icon, select 'Show Package Contents', go to gamedata, then packages. Some othe useful thing are in gamedata though, so look around.

As for importing textures: Go to packages, make your own folder, add subfolders if you want, then make the texture, take a screen shot (or just import a photo), make sure it's a power of 2, crop it, then put it in a folder in the packages folder. Add packages.cfg to the file, which should cantain a string similar to:

texture 0 "(foldername)/(subfoldername)/(picturename).png"

The subfolder is totally optional, but I recommend it.

NO, NO, NO - do NOT encourage people to store their files within the application! Consider the folders within an application to be read only - and expect osx at some point to enforce this...

Store them within the user folder - either find it by the "show user files" button, or go to ~/Library/Application Support/sauerbraten/

It's totally safe. And even if something goes DRASTICALLY wrong, you can just redownload. Everything that you did store would be erased, but everyhting in the library will stay the smae. Also, you can not make a real 'account' you just get a nickname that you use to identify with. After you redownload you can try to pull out your stored files then erase the whole old sauerbraten after you re-store your files.

baby~rabbit is right. Do not store your personal files in the application bundle. Use ~/Library/Application Support/sauerbraten/ for these files.

Also, if you intend to re-install, you should backup your user-files(if you want to keep them) and use an app such as appdelete to completely remove your old sauerbraten BEFORE re-installing the new one.

And remember: Not everyone has a high-speed connection. It's not as easy for some to just 'redownload'
