Just for fun - what bot skill are you equal to?

by useoftoaster on 05/17/2009 07:41, 22 messages, last message: 06/10/2009 23:37, 4394 views, last view: 05/05/2024 15:16

My favorite thing about Sauerbraten, and especially instagib, is that its ultra-simple gameplay is about as close to a test of raw FPS skill as there can be.

Thanks to Quin's bots, there's now something of a built in meter for how well I can play on a given day. Every now and then I'll start up a 1v1 insta deathmatch vs. a bot on a map like Tartech or Refuge. Since I rarely have access to a high speed internet connection, bots are a welcome diversion.

I notice that the skill level of bots I break even with, that is, have about a 1-1 kill-death rate at the end of a 10 minute round, varies from day to day, but it is still interesting to try to put a number to gaming ability.

So start up a 1v1 insta match on your favorite map and work up the bot skill levels (setting minimum and maximum the same, of course) until you get a 1-1 kill/death ratio - and post what skill bot you are equal to!

For what it's worth, on a bad day I am about even with a skill 97 bot, playing on Tartech.

Around 95 on a regular day, if I get rolling I can kick the ass of a 101 though.

i think most of yall are lieing. . . or al least a few of yall, i would know because i fight in multiplayer and i still end up on the winning team eventhough my teamates are either sitting aroung doing nothing or they keep dieing at the spawn shot. and somehow most of the time (execpt my off days) my team ends up winning, even with a TK'er. and i am nowhere near the 101 mark on bots.

I definitely can't beat the 101, but there are people a lot better than me at instagib and I can stay pretty even with the 100, so I wouldn't say that anyone here's lying. Here's a match I recorded vs. a skill 100 bot.

I have this little advantage though, I wrote them and hence I know their strengths/weaknesses :P

true, but as of these other people, i just can belive that all of them get 95 to 101 skill and still win. i just think that with all the people saying that, that they may be lieing, as to make it sound more "manly" (if you will) because perhaps they aren't as good as they say they are. besides haven't you ever thought about (pardon this) the who conversation that leadea one guy to say to his friends that another guy is "small down there" this is a ploy just to say i am the "alapha mail." (if you will again) and the whole "this guy is as small as such and such" as this is another ploy for "hey look this is my score, can you beat me now? do i scare you?" somtimes i just ask questions and often people give me a dishonest reply because they feel that they are less a man than me if they aren't better than me at something. as for me, i have not lied about my skill, i have an honest reply to your question. i am a man to show honesty. as for you Quin, i don't doubt you because you have shown more honesty then most people i have talked to.

Quin, your secrets :0. Or will it be a treasurehunt and I'll have to rifle though the ai file?

1) Use cover, the AI can't always aim at what they can't see (within a certain margin).
2) Be unpredictable, it is the human advantage.
3) Abuse their "shoot most immediate target" instinct, let the AI get into a pool and fight each other before taking the killing shots

Just to name a few :)

i was spectating a bot, and i notised they can literally see through walls. on face capture, i was spectating one, and one of them started aiming up at the roof where a nother bot was gaurding the flag.

If they are in the guard state themselves, they will just aim at the closest enemy. This allows them to be prepared for when the enemy actually approaches the base. It's the *only* time they aim at something they cannot see.

i can stand my ground with a bot of skill 90, with having the score around as double of the bot's. My last match was 67/38, and it wouldn't sit anywhere!
but something i hate about their programming is that they have the same shooting skills on every distance, even if you're jumping over their heads!
I believe their aiming should fail more in very close distances, cause if someone is jumping over you're head, you just aren't fast enough to shoot him back..
i know i can't!
(although the bot skill can go below defaults, this doesn't mean it is anywhere better, it gets dumper and dumber, it won't even know how to turn around or shoot)

well it just dep[ends on how fast your reactions are, i can sometimes shoot people who are jumpping over my head, just take a bit of time working on your reaction time.
