i\'ve begun a mission to port sauerbraten (cube 2, not 1) to iphone.
If anyone out there is already working on a port or is interested in contributing, let me know.

You could talk to him, rather than about him.
But bishop, ZGMF is right. How will you deal with the lack of 3d acceleration hardware?

Good luck.
Cube (the buggy version) works damn fine on my iPod2 after a few tweeks. Average 45fps, everyone is whinging about limits of 25fps and other crap, ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Folks say that iPhone isn't good enough to play cube but don't underestimate the power of the force.
Limits can be exceeded then becomes another reality.
Sauer will one day be on iPhone.
There will be a way.
I say go give it your best shot.

The iPhone has an OpenGL ES compliant 3D accelerator.

Hmm. It doesn't seem to be a very *fast* accelerator, judging by the Cube port. I wonder if that's an issue with the Cube port itself, or the iPhone/iPod Touch?

...and lots of optimizations.
You're right, I often wondered if it's even worth the effort, judging from the cube 1 port. Then again, I have other porting plans for the engine & figured doing so will help me learn the engine more intimately. So it'll be a win either way.
Obviously, alot of shader features will have to be removed and IPhone specific optimizations implemented. I'm aiming for a feature set similiar to cube 1.
I've thought about hacking cube 2's octarender code into the cube 1 port... a 'cube 1.5' of sorts.

I guess when you apply the needed downgrades to Cube 2 it will look like Cube 1. But then, faster iPhones will come to the market, and if in 2 to 3 years Cube 2 can run with most features enabled, it won't hurt to have it already ported. :)

There might be someone working on a OpenPandora port, which also needs a OpenGL ES renderer.
Maybe ask over at gp32x.com
