\"Cube can do terrains, and buildings....it would be cool to do an rpg in it\"
yes it would take a lot of work, but i think it would be pretty cool...heres my \"screenshot\" of what i think it wold look like (the level was made by me-first attempt)

not sure, i dont know much about RPGS, but i was thinking it would be cool.

hmmm, that was the exact sort of rpg i hoped it wouldn't be, basically due to the cube engine I would suggest a heavily action orientated (with a bit of leveling up included for good measure) RPG. Basically you want something dynamic as possible.

Heavily action oriented? That sounds much like good ol' Strife to me. =)

Seriously speaking, I'm afraid that the current engine is not enough for such project. What about room-over-room? And how are you going to handle fights? It can be done, but a lot of coding work is required.

Besides, good RPGs require years to make! Just think about it: new models, textures, tons of new maps, highly detailed storyline... all in all, it's not something you start considering making while drinking a cup of tea - it requires a thorough, thought-out decision.

models and textures are easy.
maps, a bit more difficult
detailed storyline, not too dificult

unfourtunatly a good RPG is a lot more than just model, textures, maps and storyline. Thinking about it it would be hell to code.

In fact, a _good_, thrilling detailed storyline is by far the hardest of all. It's not just a few (or even many) sentences packed together - it should be something that makes the gamer keep playing, dying to know, "what's next?". Good examples of such are Fallout, Daggerfall, Morrowind. Typically, it also requires a lot of little (and not so little) secondary quests, not related to the main story. The resulting amount of text would look like a good book. =)

im pretty certain that getting a good storyline is easier than getting a well playing game. Though they are both equally time consuming.

#19: some thoguhts

by Skaus on 04/01/2003 18:34

I thoutght up a way to make cube rpglike with a few more or less simple hacks.

Move the camera (not the player's actual position) 8-16 cubes over the player.

Draw the player model on the player's actual position.

keep the first person view and the controls. Disable the movement keys(forward\backward\strafe). When the player "shoots" at the ground, a movement target is put there. The player is moved towards that target by AI. Do something similar for shooting.

Tada.. diabloesque cube :)

Did that make sense?

#20: RPG

by *spentron* on 04/01/2003 19:37

I would think a great writer and maybe a few tweaks such as a NPC AI (stand there? for some reason I think the Goblin could be a shopkeeper) would be enough to do something cool and RPG-ish. Also the ability to make the environments of course.
