Hello all, just letting everyone know that I have updated my Sauerbraten website. Changes include updates in the overall design, look, and feel, as well and cool new tech. features. Some of these new features are: 1. The site now shows the latest Sauer news via RSS. 2. The ability to submit news for the RSS 3. New scrolling text (this is more of a new design feature, but let's just call it a tech. feature since it had to be coded.) 4. Some more mini new features, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit, look around, and enjoy my updated Sauerbraten site. And remember: It's not free to host, so please at least take a couple minutes to visit. :D

Here's the link:

In the intro to this thread in #4 I said I couldn't remember some of the other features. Here's one: (Although I'm not 100% sure I'm keeping it)

The ability to advertise levels, mods, or any other Sauer-related thing so whatever you're advertising spreads quickly. I noticed that Quadropolis doesn't really have advertising, although it does have the starred content feature, but that's only for real good content, but then again, what's the point of advertising something that's not that great. So in a way, Quadropolis already has advertising, but it's more of something like a hall of fame because only the best goes there. What I've added is something that people can advertise any of there Sauer-created content with, even if it's not great.

That is a poor design. It's too 'in your face' if you know what I mean.

:D

Oh, this is /excellent/. I've been looking for a site that I can use to illustrate to our new interns what not to do. This page is perfect for that.

Okay, did some work on the site. I will put up the new version soon. The main changes are: 1. The size of the moving text has been decreased. 2. Added the advertise page. Enjoy :D

"Unlike my original Sauerbraten community website, this is a .com and not a .googlepages.com site."

Unfortunately buying a domain name doesn't make the site better...

You need to really think about your web design a little more.
Moving text? no
Multicolored sentences? no
cube images as the background? no

Take a look at www.sauerbraten.org
It has simple colors that are easy on the eyes and makes it easy to find information...

I can tell you used some kind of editor to write your HTML for you, if you're really serious in making a good looking site you're going to have to learn HTML yourself because the code those things give you is terrible...

Why code the whole site when you can use an editor? I do use code, but only when it's needed.

Why does a site need to be "easy on the eyes?" The game Sauerbraten isn't that easy on the eyes. The details are fine and the graphics are great, so it's not easy on the eyes, especially if you're playing a very detailed map with spectacular lighting, cool geometry, and nice textures. It's a lot to take in. I like things that have a lot of details that the eye has to take in. Not everything has to be simple.

What's wrong with moving text? I think it makes the website look more sophisticated. And as for the cube backgrounds, well, wouldn't you rather see something as a backround than see no backround?

A website isn't a video game... usually people go to it to find what they need fast and efficiently. Most people don't want to "take in" the whole website to find one piece of information they wanted. If you're site requires this then people will probably find a website which is faster and easier for them to use.

Also no, moving text doesn't make websites more sophisticated, its just an annoyance that takes the reader's eyes of what they were reading. I would really suggest looking and websites which you find beneficial yourself and try to copy what they've done. For example, www.sauerbraten.org

As for the background. It is not the important part of the website, that's why it needs to be something simple so it doesn't distract. That is why a simple color or gradient is usually best...

Simple transference of information is more sophisticated than the flashy text crap you seem to enjoy.

People are free to make a website about whatever they want in the style they like. People are also free to choose what websites they want to visit.

Ok here we go, as a grafic- and webdesigner I got a few simple tipps for you:

1. Download the NVU editor, great free wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor, including pretty much everything you need from noob to intermediate.

2. Very important! Make up a maximum of 3 colours!! Ideal are 2 neutral colors (eg. black, gray, white, grayisch colours in general) and an active colour, such as for links, text etc...
visit http://www.kipperdesign.ch its an early attempt for my personal site and nowhere near completion, but I guess it will do as an example for colour range

3. Fontsize, stay with a fontsize, there should be an absolut maximum of 3 font-sizes, Title (or Logo if you want), Subtitles (usually same font as other font, but formatted bold) and text (size 10-12 is comfortable to read)

4. Last, dont use repetitive backgrounds, they hurt your eye, and if you do at least use a seamless texture (repeating texture X and Y)

5. Go and do it better ;)

Good luck, and im looking forward to your next attempt
