Script to create ladders?

I remember hearing of how you could access the current selection (of cubes) from scripts. I was wondering how I could select a group of cubes by hand, and then, my procedure would be as follows:

1) With selection, remove last row.
2) For remaining cubes, push face back one unit.
3) Did we push too far? (Remove the layer of cubes)
Yes: Select row behind; Go to step 1.
No: Go to step 1.

And comments on this? I'm not really literate in CubeScript right now, as I've not really used it for this sort of thing, so I'd like input :)
