Cube & Cube 2 FORUM

A matter of size...

by ZarathustraDK on 09/26/2008 13:11, 4 messages, last message: 09/27/2008 16:53, 1157 views, last view: 04/09/2024 13:04

Two questions:

How big can a Sauerbraten-map be?

How many editors can simultaneously play on a map?

Reason: Was thinking about how best to harness the power of the community (linux-guy here) in creating games. As it is now there are a throng of people who really want to help contribute in making games, however they do not possess the necessary coding-skills, graphics-skills etc. This is where Sauerbraten comes in.

Imagine a big phat server running a ginormous cube, with support for thousands of people to play simultaneously. Then unleash a horde of capable Sauerbraten-sculptors upon the cube and tell them to make, say, the Kalimdor-continent from WoW.

Yeah, I know, certain things would have to be fixed, viewdistance, organization of troops, editing-procedure, possibility to 'undo' damage. And probably a lot more.

Think it could be done? Or would there be a definite showstopper that makes it impossible?

Hmm had a look at it. It seems like a kind of distributed sandbox-thing. I was thinking more like something with an overall plan for what is being built.

Tried running along the edge of a size 16 cube timing it. Took about ten minutes. I think Kalimdor could fit inside that, given the run-speed. :)

If you're making a mod, you can turn the run speed down a bit. That should make smaller areas seem larger.

About editing, just make a server. Make sure people that you don't want to edit can't edit. You could probably write a script to save every so often, so your work can't be completely lost.

A map size 16 (btw, /newmap command is not limited to 16) would be to heavy for most of the computers, and maybe too little for a continent.
For instance k_rpg1 is a size 13 map, 266K triangles to render, 3.5 MB files.
You can copy it and paste it 64 times in a size 16 map; try to do that on your comp, you'll see that's not a good idea. (btw, don't forget to remip :) ).

Moreover, sauer have no dynamic light, that means the map would be night OR day, and never change. How many guys would complain about that? And the network code is not fit for massive games too...

The plexus project is a far more _realistic_ attempt to create and play in a big universe.
