cube on iphone

by a~baby~rabbit on 09/26/2008 03:06, 100 messages, last message: 07/24/2009 01:04, 64305 views, last view: 04/25/2024 13:02

With a couple of days work I've ported cube to the iphone/touch... the result is very rough around the edges in terms of usability and is a tad slow (5-15fps), but it works! See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzz24bpSYO4 (sorry about the poor volume, and my bad camera work...)

What next? I'll fix the interface see if I can tweak the performance a little. If I can make it more playable then I'll still needs Aards permission before I can consider making it (and it's content) a freebie on the Apple AppStore (and yes, I am a registered iphone dev).

PS Before people ask - I did consider porting Sauerbraten, but it uses too many opengl features that I'd have to work around for the ES and the codebase is significantly more complex.

In this part of the world, Christmas and New Year means most people take a few weeks off... so - patience!

Awesome Game!!!!
I have the iPod/iPhone and PC versions.
Using the Commands to alter the game helps heaps. For the many who have problems on iPod there is a review in iTunes to help out. There would be a lot of different speeds in Multi-player if used on different systems.
You couldn't play on iPod against a PC at different fps. They would run rings around you.

I love this game engine.
Well Done.
Many are having troubles with their iPod or iPhone but using Commands helps.
Hope you don't mind but there is a list of commands on itunes in a review to help fix the game.
Works very well for me.

Any of you care to provide a link for those of us who don't use iTunes?

#65: 45+fps in SP mode

by Retsam09 on 01/09/2009 07:57

Don't mean to be a pain but...

Using scripts I average about 45 fps in SP or SPDM maps and my game on iPod works so smooth.
I minimize graphics and modify the game as with the pc version.
So Dev please whatever you do, do not remove the Command interface.
Controls are fine I think. I use 3 fingers, or one. So basically not much to update for me. I like the game how it is.
Cheers!!

Huh? The iphone version is hardwired to a maximum of 30fps... but no matter, I'm glad you're happy with it.

#67: Huh?

by Retsam09 on 01/09/2009 10:53

Oh yeah....gamespeed of 10 can get 300fps but running very slow. I use 40.
I use other settings to achieve awesome results. I've been playing these Cube games for years, but gave up when better games came my way. Then by chance at the very bottom of the best 100 free Apps list, there it was.
Hovering around 100, still is.
I just trying to help its ratings is all.

#68: Cube: The little Engine that could.

by Retsam09 on 01/09/2009 15:32

It is like that little engine trying to get to the top of the hill.
It knows it can make it, it's good enough to make it, but just needs a little help getting there.
Go, you mighty little engine. (lol).

Why is it that you didn't ask if you have the permission to use any of my content in a version of cube for the iPhone?!??!!! This means mapmodels, levels, HUD-icons and everythign else!

It is a port not a mod - I approached Aard rather than each and every individual contributor - the app is available for free and the source code will be made available some point soon. If you or other contributors object to this then email me and I'll remove it from the AppStore.
