Source Code ?

Is there a chance to release the
code of the engine under
GPL or LGPL ?

#1: networking source code

I've independent released the networking code used under Cube. You can check it out at enet.cubik.org. The actual engine code however won't be released for quite some time.

#2: why?

by inertia_yetanothernick on 02/26/2002 23:48

Why would the client/server source code not be released anytime soon? I know it would decentralize development, and that might be precisely what the two(?) of you (eihrul & aard) do not want, but I think that not releasing the source code will/is, to a degree, slow the development of cube. With an open-source model (you can liscense the engine's code under the GPL or LGPL for instance), many more and new developers will flood in, and like the development of the linux kernel, more patches and ideas can be contributed, in a quicker timeframe, using different methods and ideas. That may not be desirable either, but it would also satisfy people like me who want to poke and prod at interesting code, too. I think the source code for cube and its ports should be released soon (perhaps the linux version first?). Obviously this decision is up to eihrul, aard, and whoever else is already coding for the project, but this is my two cents on the issue.

The key thing to remember is that Cube is first and foremost a personal project of Aardappel. I don't think at this point in time he necessarily wants a flood of developers trying to submit patches, methods, ideas, etc. because it's just Aardappel experimenting with ideas of his own, and I don't think he (let alone I) want to necessarily deal with managing a large scale development effort at the moment. OTOH, I did release my part of the Cube source, which you can take a look at at http://enet.cubik.org, other than that, it's a wait and see whether Aard releases his code (which may happen at some point, may not). Also, if you want interesting engine source code, Crystal Space or Nebula have way more features than Cube. :)

also, the idea that many developers speed up a programming job is one of the biggest fallacies ever. Just because some open source projects are succesful doesn't make it a magic bullet.

I also take pride in the absolute tiny-ness of the cube source. If it had lots of people working on it it would balloon in no time.

Cube WILL be open source, and I suspect not long from now. FYI it will not be (L)GPL but BSD licenced.
