Help...?

by sanderzinc on 08/15/2008 00:56, 16 messages, last message: 08/27/2008 09:17, 1873 views, last view: 04/30/2024 03:13

I have absolute no experience in programming or whatever. I just want to play an interesting free fps on my computer. I came across this, and I though it looked interesting, so I DLed the CTF edition (that was the only one available). Problem is, after installing it or whatever, I try and run it and it won\'t work. It gives me some error message with all kinds of numbers.

How do I run this game?

Ctrl C at the error window and paste it here. I assume you're using Windows of some sort but you need to tell us and be specific. Tell us your video card as well.

Sauerbraten Win32 Exception: 0xc0000005 [0xd4]

I double click on the game, and it starts loading something (a grey screen with a small pic appears and it says it's loading all kinds of stuff), but when it's done (or at least I think it's done) it immediately closes, revealing the black coding screen thing with this error message as a popup.

I'm using Windows XP with an Nvidia video card.

Can you find out what NVidia card you have. It should tell you under device manager - Display adapters.

- Right click on My Computer, Select Properties under the hardware tab select device manager.

Read the topic post and follow the instructions. (Post in THIS thread, please don't post the same issue there as well.)

Did you install the Visual C++ Framework (included in the bin dir)?

Following the instructions in the link above:

1. I'm using a Windows XP

2. I'm using NVidia GeForce FX Go5200

3. I'm using the CTF addition, I think.

4. Sauerbraten Win32 Exception: 0xc0000005 [0xd4]

5. Basically, I downloaded the file from this site. I have a shortcut on my desktop. When I click the shortcut, the whole screen turns grey, like the game (or the thing that installs it) starts running. Messages appear near the top, saying "Loading this and that", like guns or textures. Then it exits out after a short while, brings me to the black screen that displays the programs information and whatnot (not sure what it's called; like I said, I don't know programming front from back), and the popup with that error message appears.

I'm not sure what the visual c++ framework is, I just installed what was in the CTF edition.

They meant the VS 2005 runtime libraries. But you say it launches and dies halfway through, so you must have installed those.

I'd modify your sauerbraten.bat file to launch with -t

This will put it in a window and you should be able to see the command line window, which may spit out an error you couldn't see before.

There should also be a file called stdout.txt and/or stderr.txt wherever you installed Sauer. There will probably be some helpful information in there.

This is just too much trouble. I'll just find a different game. This game seems to appeal to those who know about programming, anyways (since I assume you can create your own stuff in it). Thanks for the help.

Too much trouble? It doesn't take much work to google "VS Studio 2005 runtime libraries" and install them. In fact, I think Sauerbraten comes with it.

And you are going to have some problems on that card...you'd have to turn the graphics way down.

Great! Now nobody has to waste their time helping someone who won't help himself with something so easy (searching Google for what the error says he needed).

sanderzinc: The problem is not your lack of programing ability since most other players aren't programmers either (I only know an extremely basic amount of C++ and I've played Cube 1, which is Sauerbraten's predecessor, even before that). The game doesn't require ANY programming; all that talk about the "Cube 2 engine" is just stuff that might interest programmers who want to modify it and make their own game with it.

You seem to not know the basics of computers from statements like this:
"Then it exits out after a short while, brings me to the black screen that displays the programs information and whatnot (not sure what it's called; like I said, I don't know programming front from back), and the popup with that error message appears."

That's not an insult but playing games on your PC instead of a console will require you to be able to search Google every once in a while when you encounter an error like this. Even retail games need you to do things like this, and the copy protection they use can make them even more of a hassle to get running.

What annoys everyone here is you didn't make the effort to paste or type that error message into Google and find out what you need by yourself, but instead you expected the nice people here who mostly aren't programmers to spoon feed it to you.

It ends up that way because those who are programmers ignore it entirely. Time is valuable, and wasting it is frustrating, so most people take this defensive attitude.

I started out on the net with no programming experience whatsoever. I have Google, and patient teachers on IRC, to thank for my current experience.

Sadly Quin while its blindingly obvious to us devs what to paste into google and how to filter the truth out of the chaff that comes back - it is rather less so to the normal user... It looks like we lost sanderzinc - whether that is the fault of the above forum replies, or the fault of the error handling/output of sauerbraten I don't know - but better luck next time.

wow...I think this guy is trollin' I just remember someone with the same issue.

When the install prompts you to install the VC runtimes you should click OK.
