PLAYSTATION 3 Support?

by leim1901 on 08/14/2008 06:49, 63 messages, last message: 08/24/2008 04:02, 25265 views, last view: 05/18/2024 22:32, closed on 08/24/2008 04:12

This is just a general idea.. but it seems that the guys at ProperGames were successful at porting the Cube 2 engine to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for the new "Flock" game they're making (at least I think it's based on Cube 2..

So I guess my point is this.. I'd love seeing Sauerbraten on the consoles. It's a truly great game and I think it would be pushed in popularity a ton if it was released for either the 360 or PS3. PS3 would be especially easy (at least I think it would) since it uses OpenGL and has a PPC based processor.

As far as Sony giving what is needed to compile the game for PS3, this is where I think there is a brick wall. Someone needs to convince Sony to allow a Sauerbraten build onto the PLAYSTATION Store :-P

I dont know, just sharing my dream :)

Well I can play it on my comp, but I'm just thinking that it'd be cool to have it in super high res and use the playstation 3 controllers (i know theres a way to make them work on the PC with cube but every time I try I just break the config)

You have to use the joystick mod to make a controller work with either engine.

I read that Microsoft will allow homebrew style games via XBox Live. This probably a year out but I'm sure the engine would convert nicely.

If your interested do a search for PS3/Xbox homebrew development tools and see if you can get it to compile.

These games are usually load via a hack or if your console has a mod chip. I've written a few demos on PS2 and Wii that used a port of OpenGL.

since when did the PS3 support homebrew games?
i'm betting theres a fee to put the game on the store or to acquire dev tools.

besides the fact that it requires you to dedicate part of your HD for a linux install, the PS3 linux doesn't give you access to the GPU, it is software rendering framebuffer only.

Sorry guys, but this would cost money. And would be pointless seeing how often sauerbraten gets updated, by the time a disc or marketplace item hit the public all the servers would say "newer protocol". Also, the Xbox and Xbox 360 are strictly DirectX, if you wanna port the entire rendering engine from OpenGL to DirectX go ahead. Actually, if someone did that I would use my dev kit and make some unofficial xbox executables. But I don't know how well a GeForce 3 + Shaders would run it.

Just to clarify a little, our forthcoming Flock! isn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t actually based on Sauerbraten - it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s a based on a completely different set of in-house technologies.

However, we do have another game prototype that is heavily derived from Sauerbraten that does in fact run on both PS3 and Xbox360 (yes, we rewrote (and enhanced) the rendering engine in DirectX, and in fact we then ported that back to OpenGL for the PS3 support).

This may one day see the light of day on those two platforms (there is interest in the game from a few publishers), and at which point we\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ll be adapting the geometry storage and rendering engine to sit on top of our technologies being used in Flock! which is a lot more mature on those platforms.

Taking Sauerbraten (as is) to Playstation Store as a self published title is an easier prospect than going to XBLA as there\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s less in the way of concept approval there, and standing policy on XBLA is \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"no 1st person shooters\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\".

The \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"homebrew\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" route on Xbox360 is via the XNA Creators Club which is a really nifty thing for bedroom coders(and pretty damn good for Developers as well), but the coding language is C# so we\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'re talkig an almost total rewrite of the existing c++ code.

Usually it's someone trying to use a username or e-mail that is already used, or someone failing the math problem. Then every ' gets a backslash.

Ah so that would be a forum "feature" then? :)

Yup, I was trying to match the combo of username and email address I used previously (epic fail on my part...).
