Creating Maps - yes another thread!

by darkeenNOSPAMATwestnetDOTcomDOTau on 07/31/2008 18:37, 8 messages, last message: 08/05/2008 15:01, 1059 views, last view: 04/21/2024 06:14

Hi All,

I've started creating a map for an RPG game (so the GM can show the players what the town and inside buildings looks like).

I have several questions:
- I've created a sloping roof but cant get the even sloping for corners. How do you get the even sloping? Whats the key? (I have found that by raising the surface of the slope then trying to slope it, that it helps. Is there another way?)

- How do you create Circular towers where both the inside and outside are circular? Make single cubes and gradually slope them all individually?

- How do you create very small circular poles? In several RPG maps there are banisters bending around the edge of the stairs. How do you create these? (They arent models - I checked).

That's all I've got to start with. Thanks.

I'm no expert, exactly, but here is how I'd do those things:

1) I think you need to push 3 sides of the cube down. If we mean the same thing, then this will make the corners 'meld' together.

2) I would do this by making two layers of cubes (the magnitude should be 3 or less, or else the walls will be really thick). You then push down the horizontal sides (Like: <--->) about 3 mousewheel clicks, and do that all the way around.

3) Same as above, but slope down one side of the top also. You can study the maps and try recreating the railings right next to one.

I can help you with this as I have done this already. But the damn things at home about 400 miles from me. When I get to it I will email it to you and you can work with it from then on.

Yes, I had to gradually slope the cubes. I also made a bent piece of a giant pipe too. But If I remember it was hard or long work.

Or see the map "spiralz" and take out the stairs bits.

Is anyone else of the opinion that spiralz and ladders should be updated with more variations from different maps? And probably the doors map too.

they are the originals so i would leave them as is. That would be like taking first ever map and making it into mach3.

You misinterpret the purpose of the maps. firstever is an archive of where we started, which spiralz and ladders are intended to be demos of how to do it. When Sauer was first picking up speed and mappers were starting to ask how to do stuff, it was recommended that they copy from those maps.

Hi,

Thanks.

I finally figured out the keys to use:

Q + scrollwheel whilst selecting a side (or selection of sides) would "bend/fold" the sides in.

I could not see this in any documentation, nor in the actual game itself.
It would appear that this is an "undocumented feature"!

I used this to create sloping rooves on buildings and sloping walls (ie buildings on the diagonal to the game "cube".

Was the leaving out of this command intentional?

(PS: I use Sauerbraten under Linux from Ubuntu 7.10 aptitude sources).

Thanks.

Not really. There isn't that much more you can do with spiral staircases.
For ladders, you can certainly make more variations now (I saw a ladder made of rungs built into the wall), the concept is still the same, and that's really all the ladders map is for.

Ever notice how when you say a word enough, it doesn't seem like a word any more?
