Memory Leak 6-20-2008 CTF version.

by TomCat39 on 07/24/2008 03:51, 4 messages, last message: 07/25/2008 04:22, 995 views, last view: 05/05/2024 15:23

Ever since this release I've been getting virtual memory errors after playing Saub.

I even had Saub crash with a not enough virtual memory.

And after a bunch of play for a couple of days my page file was 1.06 GIG. Normally doesn't get over 540 meg and usually hangs around 350 meg.

I had to reboot just to go surf the web.

I didn't uninstall and reinstall. I just installed over the top of the previous version. I did wipe out the config file and let it remake it, then I just adjusted some variables back to the previous config.

What areas should I look to see if it's my fault, like config settings etc?

Is anyone else is having this problem?

It's not giving back all the memory when I close and after a couple of days play I have to reboot to use my machine. It didn't happen with the previous version.

Oh, this is on WinXP with SP3.

Thanks for any info ahead of time.

A memory leak in Sauerbraten would only hurt as long as Sauerbraten runs. As soon as you close Sauerbraten all the memory from possible memory leaks would be given free.

I'm playing sauer on a Mac and have no memory errors that I know of. I'll double check, I could be just a problem with windows (quite likely)

Not from my understanding.

From what I've understood, a memory leak is when the program doesn't release memory upon closing.

I guess the bad memory management while running could also be counted as a memory leak.

My first experience with memory leaks was with the win9x/ME kernel that didn't release memory when you closed apps so you had to reboot after 3 days or sometimes 1 game of something like dungeon siege.

Program closed but not all resources freed.

Saub is acting like this now on my WinXP machine with sp2 and sp3.

Now I did revert a few config settings to previous version config settings. I was wondering if any settings from the previous versions would screw up this version Saub.

ie the weapons binds, I put back to previous version to where it cycles through weapons. The config command looks totally different than this version on the weapon binds.

What settings in config bloat memory? Maybe I set them to some insane size...

The one thing I do know, is this was never an issue until this release.

#4: Think I got it figured.

Did some inspecting via filemon and I noticed the "new" avg free 8.0 resident shield was seriously scanning windows/temp. And I think that folder is used a lot when I game and so when I put that into exceptions, my page file freed right up back to what it was before playing.

So not Saub at all by the looks, but the mix of heavy gaming and a not as friendly AVG free virus scanner.

Thanks for all your replies.
