/getmap feature in all modes! ?

Hey, why can't you add that /getmap in all mode's or better autogetmap. That would be a really nice feature for mappers if the server can store map(s!) and if the client dont has the map then client sends a signal to the server and as response you get it from the server.

This would work well! It is like Wolfenstein ET, or Warsow, if you don't have the map, it gets downloaded.

This means my server could have custom maps from Quadropolis, and when someone joins who doesn't have it, it could either auto get map it, or ask if they want it. If they don't then they get disconnected because if they are running around on a different map, then we could see them floating or halfway underground :D

I've thought about this before, and I really think this should be possible. However, there's probably a good reason why we can't /getmap in modes other than coop. If so, could someone please explain?

I guess you've never played AssaultCube. People simply don't getmap no matter how many times you tell them to, sometimes due to a language barrier and sometimes just stupidity. Then the server will have half of players on one map and half on the other and players will be walking on air and going through walls depending on what map you're on.

An incomplete list of obvious issues:

Sauerbraten is relatively fast paced so having to wait for a map to download would cause the ADDH folk to panic.

getmap is actually incomplete (to make it fast) - no lightmap data, no pvs data, no cfg files are sent, and lets not even consider the issue of sending missing textures or models...

Who pays for the bandwidth? Some people may not like the idea of their server suddenly have to spit greatly increased amounts data to each player on each new map.

1. They can use a different server, just like how people who want a private or locked game have to go to a server that doesn't disable them.
2. True, and AssaultCube doesn't have this because cfg files could contain malicious CubeScript. I think they've figured out a solution to that for the next version but I'm not sure.
3. Can't it be decided by the server admin through a command line option?

You could limit the script to GFX settings only. Like loading of textures, skymap, models.

Yeah, I mean just in the last release, there was Reissen, Tejen, mach2, Berlin Wall, Paradise Lost, Hand of God II...

Well, for now, when you make a map and upload it on Quadropolis, you aren't uploading it to be played online. Which makes me wonder, without a more complete getmap function (send textures, models, etc), except for next release candidates, you really have no reason to upload a multiplayer map to Quadropolis.

Sorry but we do live in the world of broadband. It would not take long to download a map. We can't accommodate dial-up users forever.

I agree with {Qs}Homicidal. This is a much needed feature. Every other game has it and WE need it.

fhdsjkconorfhskjd really makes a point. Quadropolis is good for sharing artwork-maps and stuff for the next release. But all the other multiplayer maps are going down in darkness.

I guess most Sauerbraten players don't even know quadro.

Auto download would be the best solution.

Yep 100% not just maps those cool hardworked on Solaris Objects and Hudguns will never see anyreal use and its a waste cuz there a HELL of a lot better then what we currently have
and all the maps that are on there NO on plays them. its a sad fact and know onw wan't to admitt it

Your ignorance astounds me. If you actually look at the content in Sauer, a huge percentage of it was originally hosted on Quadropolis. People make maps, put them up on Quad, and then they get added to the release: not the other way around. ¬_¬ Look at a bunch of the models: they started as concepts and proofs on Quad and were eventually added into the core engine.

Having an improved getmap feature would be nice, but there's no call to belittle the good that Quadropolis has done for the community, and the good it will continue to do.
