I have a lot of interest in that translation system- I'd like to see those "lang.cfg" files into Sauerbraten.

I can translate into French, I've been doing so since the final release of Cube.

Can someone explain to me what this project is. I've downloaded it and cannot understand what it's supposed to be?

Looks like a few new maps on a mod of cube but what is the purpose?

Sorry I don't know much about this project.

Thanks :)

You might be interested in a podcast where mike talks about this project. :)

Towards the end of the show (97:20) is where the sandbox discussion starts, but there is also Doom 3 Last Man Standing Coop discussion in the middle.

meh I have some issues of how he worded things he made it sound like all the editing and scripting IS part of sandbox and not part of cube II and he should have pointed to cube II more :D

I listened to the podcast and still don't understand it. SandBox is no different than cube 2. So why is Mike not out there promoting Sauer?

Actually what I understood from it is that Mike is re-branding Cube 2 as Sandbox and making money from it? Is this correct?

meh I would not call it re-branding

but it sounded like cube II was the mod and sandbox was the engine
as for selling I think thats legal under Zlib not sure but he certainaly need to set the guys at MOD DB Strait

legally yes as long as Cube Engine gets a mention you can use it for whatever you like.

What I don't understand is that Sandbox does not add anything new. The podcast boasted about the realtime map editing which was probably developed by Aard or Eihrul for Cube.

Come on get a couple of your buddies to translate the menus into different languages, turn off the blood, create a few maps and call it your own project...sorry but that's low.

I have a great deal of respect for Aard and Eihrul and all the hours they have put into cube so I apologize for ranting.

"Sandbox is a game design tool based on the Cube 2 engine"

That's at the beginning of EACH post calimer makes. I'm pretty sure if people decided to even look for the cube 2 engine, they'll realise we've nearly identical codebases.

"Sandbox does not add anything new" - scanf

wrong. The majority of the art didn't transfer from cube 2 (you should know the story, we're not allowed to, mike can tell you more of the specifics). Among several code changes, those simplistic multilingual stuff, and all the art we do ourselves (mapping, texturing, modeling, etc), I fail to see how ti doesn't add anything new

"what I understood from it is that Mike is re-branding Cube 2 as Sandbox and making money from it" - scanf

no, we're not making any money from it, there's some ads on the main page to help pay for hosting, but that's the extent of it.
while I'm not sure what you mean by re-branding, I don't think we are :)

Hirato,

I understand the licensing model of Cube. The content is not open source. I was talking about the core code.

Unless I misunderstood the podcast Mike gets paid for demoing sandbox. I was not referring to selling sandbox for a profit.

I'm all for promoting the cube engine. But I do not see enough differences between the core of sauer and sandbox to create a whole new project.
