Sauerbraten Installer

by Titanic12ship on 06/28/2008 03:18, 15 messages, last message: 07/02/2008 03:45, 1516 views, last view: 04/29/2024 22:02

Hello! I have created a Sauerbraten installer for Macs that installs Sauerbraten. Is anyone interested? It would be of little or no use now, but when the next version of Sauer is about ready to be released, I think it would be helpful. You can pick where you want Sauer to be installed, read the license, and more. In your posts, say if youre interested. Remember, this is Mac only.

It's good someone bothers doing this, but - why would you need that? You copy the Files from the DMG over to where you want it and done. No need of an installer IMHO.

I know that, but a few peoples' wish lists for future releases included installers. Anyway, you are right, I just thought that there are some people that might not copy the files right. Also, when an application has an installer, it makes it look more high-quality.

I do understand that if Sauer needed an installer because there were so many files to put in various places, someone would most likely not hesitate to create one.

Again, I just thought I could help.

I think what you are planning to implement is a good thing - not everyone wants to copy files/folders into the right directory structure(s) (I have a friend who is still worried after 15 or more years of using computers that he might accidently replace non existent files in a folder structure by copying data over to his directories and thus transfers all file one at at a time) - and as you say, an installer would proved a more polished result for the end user.

Hmm, the most polished app I know of is Quicksilver, and it has no installer. Sure, its a single file (the binary), but Sauer is also a single folder (basically).

That aside, I think an installer should:

• install the sauer folder into your "Games" or "Applications" folder
• install mod packs into the usr directory
• install updates into the first directory, and if any of the maps/files in usr are in the update, remove them from usr. Probably should ask first.

#5: adding to it

by Titanic12ship on 06/28/2008 17:16

I am adding Assaultcube and other Sauer and Cube mods to the installer, and am making them optional. I will also include parts of those mods/games' readme files. So basicly, this is an installer that installs Sauer and anything that has to do with Sauer and Cube.

Its a folder, you can run it directly out of the folder, so there isn't a lot left to do install wise.

In terms of looking pro - I'm happy to put a pretty icon on the folder and a background image in the folder, and I'm sure its just a matter of flags to config the dmg decompressor to show a license.

In terms of support of mod packages - it would be straightforward to make the launcher support drag'n'drop of mods and to remember them.

In terms of supporting assaultCube - sorry, that's nothing to do with sauer. Talk to the assaultCube people.

Finally, DO post a link to your installer (please filled with minimal dummy content - NOT 350Mb of data) - we are open minded enough to take a look and consider it :P

How about like some programs, have a nice screenshot that has the sauerbraten folder and a shortcut to the mac's applications folder

since sauerbraten doesn't have to install things in system directories it also shouldn't have an installer. this ain't windows.

#9: Released!!

by Titanic12ship on 07/01/2008 20:43

I've released the installer file! A couple notes, though:

1. It is not yet complete, because I need to add a few more mods and extras.

2. I took out most of the content so the file wouldn't be huge since for now it is just a demonstration.

Here it is:

The Background Image needs to be changed, you can't properly read what's written in the box with that dark (and distorted) image. ;)

I'll summarise my opinion with the following quote from your installer, "Installing this software requires all applications be closed and the system logged out when the installation is done. Are you sure you want to install the software now?"
