Why "Sauerbraten"?

by JBridge on 06/09/2008 11:14, 20 messages, last message: 06/29/2008 11:03, 3227 views, last view: 05/01/2024 06:51

I've been wondering this for a while. Why is an FPS named after a food? In a similar vein, why Eisenstern?

.. that Aardappel was enjoying a a nice meal of Sauerbraten while he came up with the idea to create this project.

Anyway - why not? ;-)

The predecessors name of Cube is easy enough to understand/pronounce .. the RPG's name of "Eisenstern" could be translated as "iron star", maybe you'd also like to know that there's a "Morgenstern" - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_star_(weapon) abd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flail_(weapon) - so maybe that goes some way toward ending your wonderings.

Sauerbraten is an odd name...sour-roast in English for those people who actually believe Fox news and haven't figured it out.

In addition to this game and it's prequel, there are some films named "Cube" and "Cube 2" so right there we have a potential cause for confusion.

On the other hand, I've not heard about any film with the name "Sauerbraten" so no confusion there, I suppose. (If I'm wrong, I'm very intrested in what kind of movie "Sauerbraten" would turn out to be ;)

BTW, according to some friends, the "Cube" and "Cube 2" films were pretty crappy films in the "elaborately engineered murdering of people" genre so I don't mind that this game has a name which is disconnected from those films.

I saw those films. They're completely unrelated, but shit, they're quite good.

By the way, I think the game is named after food since it's yummy.

Amyways, back on topic. Does anyone actually know why the hell it's called Sauerbraten? Maybe I should email Aardappel about it.

What MeatROme said, its what I had for lunch when I was thinking about those deformable octrees for the first time. Sauerbraten is roast beef, marinaded for days in some sour (milky?) sauce. It was a working title, but as working titles go, it stuck.

Eisenstern is just a random made up german word that would sound appropriate for an RPG, leaving much open to define what it means. Kristian (SleepwalkR, the creator of these forums and website host) came up with it.

Cube was a working title, since the engine I had been playing around with just before was called Sphere, as it was meant to be something similar to what Cube became, but on the surface of a sphere. Being a complete math newb, I got annoyed by translating back and forth between world space and the spherical mapping, and said to myself, lets start another engine meant for easy editing, and lets just make it even more simplistic. Cube was born.

I don\\\'t know if you guys know, but aardappel actually means potatoe in dutch, i guess aardappel is obsessed by food and therefore called his engine after the lunch he was eating.

There's an old joke that Cube 3 will be entitled "Aardappel Pie". Makes me laugh :)

I bet that Aard is working on a MMORPG branch of Saurbraten that is called "Sauercrowd" ;)

#18: sauerbraten name

by zopiac on 06/27/2008 05:55

i think i figured it out!

the character models may have been what sparked it. they look like angry, or sour, pigs-people. brats are made out of beef stuffed into pig intestines, hence the name saurbrats, or sauerbraten in german.

Huh. Interesting. By the way, Aard apparently has a Wikipedia article.
