The Starship Enterprise Map: Released

by dangerstripe_dan on 05/24/2008 04:04, 10 messages, last message: 05/26/2008 05:29, 1360 views, last view: 04/30/2024 03:45

I posted this in the map editing forum, but realized that this might be better off as it's own subject to avoid cluttering up that thread.

The map is on quadropolis for download:

I'd suggest you take a good look through the texture pack... I found a few 'copies', a very obvious 'Copy of Red.jpg' as an example...

There are also texture manipulation commands you can use whilst loading it (I suggest you read on on that too, there 'flipped' images aren't really needed, as you can just load a flipped copy, at the cost of very little extra memory usage)

also I'm curious hat settings you used to remip it, after 'remiping' the triangle count went down by a good 100K (627K and 872K respectively)

lastly, I'd suggest you take a good look at how the textures are applied, specially tv_startrek.jpg... though you can probably fix this using an x and Y offset.

positively it looks pretty damn awesome, wish you well in your future endeavours mate :)

Most of the texture manipulation commands did not exist when the map was created. I've been working on this for two years. After that, it was just a waste of time to flip the textures back and re-align them. That was one of my big wish list items when I first started working with Sauerbraten- it was a pain in the rear to make the textures line up by physically adjusting the textures.

I am not familiar with the remip command; The only settings I changed from default was the light detail was dropped to 64 from 32. What does that command do?

I apologise for being a bit vague with the displaced textures. so I took a few screenshots :D

Weird; I've tried this on 4 different machines and the textures are lined up on all four.

What version of the software are you using? All four of my test machines are running the December release, both the W32 version and the linux version (running on Ubuntu 8.04), so if you are running something from the CVS it might be a difference in those.

When you're editing, hit 7 to turn on outlines (or /outline 1). See how each face is made up of a bunch of little triangles? Use /remip to make a lot of small triangles into a few big ones.
It optimizes the map greatly.

The "Sonic Bidet" and "Sonic Bidet Recovery Room" with lots of bio beds eh? lmao

I'm playing it in /dmsp mode, at least there's a few scattered monsters to surprise me while exploring the map. I kill them with the saw.

Your skybox was not very good, no offense, so if you want you can have this skybox I created.

Here is one image (ambiance was also at zero):

The actual files are available here:

Just download each image and name it appropriately (see the image names in flickr). If you do use them, make sure you use the large images, not the initial smaller ones that flickr displays.

You might want to make some edits to your skybox. Your planets kinda... end. Unless we're dealing with starlight bending around the planets, their shadows are way, way too short.

Yeah, I threw them together very quickly with photoshop. Thats what i get for not spending the 400 plus hours to render all the combined images with terragen. I felt there just needed to be something to replace the current skybox.

They have since been updated to include a shadow where the rest of the planet is.
