New Release June 15th! FINALIZE CONTRIBUTIONS!

by eihrul@work on 05/12/2008 00:14, 173 messages, last message: 06/18/2008 03:20, 83630 views, last view: 05/20/2024 08:03, closed on 06/18/2008 03:26

It's getting about that time where the amount of stuff in CVS has reached critical mass, a boat load of good stuff in terms of the engine being prettier, faster, smoother, CTFier, etc.

So I am tentatively setting a release date for June 15. There are still things that need to get done before then, so the release may be later than that, or if everything falls into place earlier, it may be earlier, but not earlier than June 1.

In any event, if you were planning on contributing anything, please get that finalized by at least June 1, to make sure it gets in.

Among things we still need: more CTF maps. They still need to be at least release quality in playability, if not visuals (on which we may be more lenient, but please, no ugly maps either).

Also, I encourage people to hunt for any relevant bugs (by playtesting!) in the CVS stuff that need to be fixed before release. It should be mostly stable (i.e. won't blow up your computer or anything), and mostly in the state it will be at release (minus one or two things still in the works), so feel free to try it out. But do make sure your entire CVS install is up to date as of at least today before you test, so that there are no false alarms.

#21: Jake4

by Mr.Biggles on 05/13/2008 22:07

i dont know too much about this next release, but i really think Jake4 should be included in it. its got one of the highest ratings on quad currently (4.9 outa 5 im pretty sure) and it is pretty good as far as playability.

Sincerely -
Mr.Biggles

Yes, you name it, it's really tricky. To me, it just doesn't feel right, in contrast to the guns in UrT, to older versions of sauerbraten and to many other games.
Of course, shooting a real gun is done absolutely different, like it's implemented it Tom Clancys games, but that's not how it should be in sauerbraten. :D

No, I haven't played around with the hudguns, I don't have any clue about this and currently no time to learn it, too bad.

By the way, what about Motion Blur?

Why in the world would you want motion blur? It would cause (most likely) a large slowdown in FPS, and wouldn't contribute much. And it's *certainly* not in line with the minimalistic style of Sauer.

#27: Sniper range?

by Osbios on 05/14/2008 21:40

Is the range of the sniper wider then in the last release? Because even without using zoom it was (is?) not a real sniper expect the damage.

yea i rifle needs a range boost and a power boot to be a TRUE rifle it needs its range amped by at least 25% and a 15% power boost to be more effective when sniping at very long range :D

The rifle range was upped 2x in CVS, equivalent to a gridpower size of 11 (the last time I checked anyway), so the other tower in face-capture is now snipable :P The damage hasn't changed, but I'm not sure about kickback.

#30: Crosshair

by Chaos on 05/15/2008 01:53

I've been using this since it's release: http://www.quadropolis.us/node/969

It's a way more attractive looking crosshair that complements the feel of Sauer very nicely. Especially with the new HUD guns added in the previous release.

Is motion blur different than blurring when you turn fast?

#33: one thing...

by SephoD. on 05/15/2008 11:05

I have been using the CVS version to make a map... the only thing I found annoying is that sometimes when I go from edit mode I seem to fall from the plane and get stuck \"somewhere\" in a place I cant get out of without restarting the map...

The same can be said for Sauerbraten's bloom feature.

...and that's why I don't use it. It cuts about 20 FPS off my framerate.

Well, really and truely, there are a few differences, but not ones that usually make it into realtime renders. A proper motion blue only blurs objects that are moving significantly in relation to the camera: so the playermodel will not be blurred, and usually the more distant objects in their trajectory will not be blurred. On the same note, things that are supposed to be moving faster in relation to the camera will be more blurred (so if you're rotating the camera really fast, distant object will now be the most blurred).

It can be a neat effect, very artistic and all, but I doubt it'll get much use any time soon. Certainly not without more demo-centric features.

#38: [S]auerbraten [Ex]tended Sound Pack

by D-TurboKiller (LT) on 05/16/2008 22:56

I've taken the sounds from my mod and made it pretty easy to use it in CVS. You can get it here: http://mihd.net/5uzibfx
It's very easy to use. Just extract to the main folder. It'll only overwrite sounds.cfg.
If the developers like it, feel free to add this to CVS. I think they combine nicely in-game. Do tell me if you do ;)

Meanwhile, I'm almost done with a better version of my map, trying to make it better for CTF.
