decal glitch

I'm not sure if this is just because of win XP, it might be, but hey. one of my friends downloaded cube to windows XP on his laptop, and for some strange reason all of the decals (crosshair, weapon effect sprites, etc.) simply appear as black squares. I've checked the filenames of those resourses and everything else I can think of that might go wrong. has anyone else gotten this problem?

I'm quiet sure he does... and if this has been posted before, I'm sorry, I must have overlooked it. eh, I'll solve it somehow. thanks anyway.

the 'decal' glitch seems to reacur seemingly randomly on diffrent computers/operating systems and games.

So far i havent found a solution, but if any one else does, id love to see it :)
