Dad@mepis1:~/Games/sauerbraten$ ./sauerbraten_unix
Your platform does not have a pre-compiled Sauerbraten client.
Please follow the following steps to build a native client:
1) Ensure you have the SDL, SDL-image, SDL-mixer, and OpenGL libraries installed.
2) Change directory to src/ and type "make install".
3) If the build succeeds, return to this directory and run this script again.
Dad@mepis1:~/Games/sauerbraten$ cd src/
Dad@mepis1:~/Games/sauerbraten/src$ make install
cd enet; ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... gawk
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Have you looked at config.log?

Probably in src/.

Are you sure you should be compiling Sauerbraten?

#4: building

Heh, good question SheeEttin, but another one is why there's supposedly no pre-built binary ... what release/src-state are we talking about here anyway?

configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

That's a pretty straight-forward message .. but it could have multiple reasons.
Anyway - the whole thing was happening while compiling ENet - it hasn't even started on Sauerbraten ... just out of curiosity ... did you read src/enet/README ?!?! you should.

"build-essential(s)" is the name of the packet the whole building-tools have been bundled away in ever since some linux-distros no longer think you'll use them sooner rather than later ... but mmmh, then he wouldn't have found a C compiler at all ...

Just checking - Mepis is also a live-CD - you weren't trying to build in a directory w/o write-permissions maybe - also the whole dance is:
make clean
make
make install

HTH

zelda4evr : please give us more background, if you really want us to give helpful responses .. did you read our posts above? What can you say to them?!?

Please give us the output of "uname -a" and "ldd bin_unix/linux_client".
Have you checked that that file is executable ... have you tried running it manually?
From the game/install-directory call:
bin_unix/linux_client -w1024 -h768 -a0 -f0 -b32 -z24 -t

I have the same compile error.

MeatROme, I followed your instructions and heres what happened with "bin_unix/linux_client -w1024 -h768 -a0 -f0 -b32 -z24 -t "

"...
unknown command: strreplace
unknown command: variantshader

Ahhh. ... well, then, you've certainly not got the most current binary for what's in your CVS-checkout - those lines are due to new shader configuration code and your binary obviously doesn't know about the commands yet - meaning you HAVE TO compile a binary for yourself ...
... but this is th first I read here about any of you using CVS .. using CVS is your own problem - if you can't make it work : stick to the release :-P

Also - I haven't yet heard whatever was in that "config.log" the original posting spoke of ... anyway - CVS is not for the uninitiated ... and initiating you via the forum can be a tedious job, better you come to IRC or read up on CVS usage on the interwebs :)
