Sauerbraten won't run...

by Speculant on 03/05/2008 04:24, 19 messages, last message: 03/11/2008 03:46, 2316 views, last view: 05/04/2024 04:20

Whenever I open the Sauerbraten .bat file in Windows XP, a error windows pops up saying:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Sauerbraten\sauerbraten.bat'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I've tried every .bat file that I can find, they all say the same thing.

Now for the strange part: I used Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, loaded up a copy of Windows XP, ran the Sauerbraten .bat file (inside the virtual machine) and it ran just fine!

Please help, until this is fixed, I can't play!!

Bizarre...

Just for kicks, try renaming the 'sauerbraten.bat' file (NOT the start menu shortcut) to 'sauerbraten.cmd', then double-click it.

So you are saying that you cannot run ANY .bat file at all?

I tried changing the extension to .cmd, the same error box came up, only now it said:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Sauerbraten\sauerbraten.cmd'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

Nope, I can't run ANY .bat OR .cmd file at all...

Wow. That IS bizarre. It seems not like a Sauer problem, but a Windows problem.
Try opening a command prompt (Start->Run->cmd), typing cd "C:\Program Files\Sauerbraten", and typing start sauerbraten.bat

Better yet, when you've got the command prompt open to that point, instead of typing "sauerbraten.bat", try "bin\sauerbraten.exe -r -w[width] -h[height] [-t]", replacing [width] and [height] with your actual, and putting in the [-t] if it's in your batch file.

Funny, the cmd.exe file was somehow missing on my computer. I found a copy of it online and put it in WINDOWS/system32 folder, and everything works fine! I also played a little bit of the RPG project, and I can't wait until it is finished!!

LOL. Wow. How the **** did cmd.exe get deleted/moved??? It's cool you got it working though.

Yeah, I have no idea how cmd.exe got deleted...one last question, though, how do I add maps into the Sauerbraten directory? I don't see a subfolder...

all *.ozg *.cfg go in packages\base folder

Maps go someplace in the packages subdirectory. Most are in base, and that's the default location for them.

Not all. The base ones do. Stop the misinformation.

If I were you, I would *immediately* download a good antispy/antivirus program and run a full scan...

Just saying. Having system files mysteriously vanish isn't caused by gamma radiation ;)

there are PLENTY of reports on the web of system files spontaneously vanishing in windows systems. I remember when I was using the gimp on my system. when I launched it, about 40 days after installation (mind you, I've been using it a fair bit inbetween), it complained about a missing dll. there as no such error in the prior runs though. and surely enough, after installing that dll, everything was fine again.

so having the files mysteriously vanish is a microsoft issue with their DRM utilities, not spyware or virii. though in pre XP the virii and the spyware were the cause, but it's not anymore.

Actualy this is most often caused by filesystem errors. Fat32 is especialy bad at this, NTFS is much better but still suffers from this problem.

I recall a situation on a Windows NT 4.0 machine years ago when I was working at a helpdesk where, and I am not making this up, because the disk was more than 2GB in size, ntfs.sys could not be loaded by the boot loader. Apparently Windows sometimes decided to move system files around on large disks. Probably not at all related to this issue, but couldn't resist sharing. ;]

Gamma rays, no. Cosmic rays, yes: http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/03/08/1349220

Bleah: 'It's a problem that largely only affects RAM'

As to the other comments about why a system file would magically disappear -> and people wonder why I won't run servers on Windows...

Erm?

Yeah that little yarn is very amusing, too bad it actually hurts the cause (when read by the properly informed) instead of helping it. I wish people would check their facts and try to be just a wee bit subjective when writing those things...
