Wouldn\'t it be cool if Sauerbraten could read Doom wads?

by slowerbraten on 01/27/2008 20:40, 5 messages, last message: 01/31/2008 16:12, 1312 views, last view: 04/18/2024 07:50

The original Doom engine is still has a modding community, and some sourceports are very advanced. A modified version called Doom Legacy even brought 3D model support and normal mapping to the engine. But, still it\'s all cheap hacks and based off old technology. I was thinking, how difficult would it be to make a simple doom wad -> ogz converter? It\'d be a mod I\'d be interested in developping, but I\'m really busy and dont have much expierience. Still a cool thought though...

This ought to help you out a fair bit, if you're serious about doing it.

I have been waiting for this, so you better do it. As for helping you, you don't want my help, I'll just break your code...

#3: interesting idea

but "rasterizing" doom's sectors to the octree is not trivial, in fact it would hardly be any easier than reading bsps from whatever engine. You'd have to keep recursively cutting up every volume until each can be described faithfully by an octree node. Nevermind that doom also would require triangulation additionally.

And then... you'd just have a geometry outline, with no lighting, and no gameplay. As much fun as doom maps are, very few of the custom maps would look good next to sauers maps... not even gothic99 :)

#4: Cube Engine,

Wouldn't this be easier in the Cube engine, because it doesn't use the octree?

It would be easier to rasterize a Doom map into a Cube map, but it'd still be uglier than a Cube map that was designed for the engine.

What might be more feasible would be engine-modifications to get Doom-style bitmap-characters into Sauer. But it would be kinda silly-looking, and you'd probably want a converter that extracts the images into a more modular format.

Really, if you want to play Doom maps, play a sourceport - they might not have the same features as Sauer, but they work well for what they're designed for.

That being said, I've always really liked the Doom map format.
