Cube & Sauerbraten localization

I want to know how to localize cube/sauerbraten to make it more accessible to people which who speaking english a bit or dont speak it at all.
I've created font file named ruschars.png and added some lines to font.cfg [
font rus "data/ruschars.png" 32 64 0 -1 5 6
//russian chars in ascending order
fontchar 0 0 46 //á
fontchar 46 0 42 //â
fontchar 88 0 44 //÷
fontchar 132 0 38 //ç
fontchar 170 0 50 //ä
fontchar 221 0 40 //å
fontchar 261 0 39 //³
fontchar 300 0 70 //ö
fontchar 370 0 41 //ú
fontchar 411 0 43 //é
fontchar 460 0 52 //ê

fontchar 0 76 44 //ë
fontchar 45 76 44 //ì
fontchar 93 76 51 //í
fontchar 147 76 48 //î
fontchar 195 76 54 //ï
.....
]
However, it doesnt work :(
What I need to do else?

#1: engine uses default font

by MeatROme on 01/16/2008 20:04

to make the engine use it, your font should _replace_ default font-configuration!
To make sauerbraten display currently unprintable characters : you'd need to MOD the engine!
Compare

to get you going in that respect.

The tutorial for showing the unprintable characters is not working with the current version...
Can anyone please update the tutorial?

#3: font usage

by Razgriz on 02/17/2010 19:38

I would go ahead and ask why sauer doesn't use fonts. Because there was a good reason, which in any case, i can't remember

Where as i love the idea of russian chars, i just have one question that comes to mind as far as i go... i don't speak nor read russian, and i know that what i am about to ask/suggest will be a huge pain in the butt... is it possible to add along with that mod a translator so when someone types russian words in, i can read them? but i know you people have enough to deal with, without me being a annoying fool...

|ice|sub-zero|L:
I think it be possible with google translate mod or with other web dictionary, but anyway 90% of russians write words not correctly or use slang so translator will be useless...

No, I won't. As I stated at the top of the page - these are just basic examples to show what - given a specific code-base (2007 'summer'-release in this case) - can be done.
If you're fluent in C/C++ you'll be able to do much more sensible/useful stuff with whatever changed code-base is currently available.

For SB to use more than the given ASCII subset (roughly 32-127) the engine would have to be changed, so all the postings above are off target in that respect:
you can only change the _appearance_ of the given subset, not the subset itself by using your own font image and config-file!

We can discuss it in sauerbraten@conference.jabber.ru

Supporting ASCII ISO Latin-1 might be vaguely justifiable, but supporting adhoc languages or unicode is not going to happen.

As MeatROme said - font files change _appearance_ of characters only, it doesn't add more or make them magically mean something else - because if it did then consider what would happen if you were to chat with someone in multiplayer and they don't have your 'special' font...

I should add that of course all the menus, cfg text, etc can be translated to other languages... but there are also a lot of hardcoded strings within the C++ code that need to be changed too.
