Platinum Arts Sandbox Beta 2.0 Test 1 Release

Here is the test1 release of Platinum Arts Sandbox Beta 2.0. Platinum Arts Sandbox focuses on making cube 2 accessible for kids and on making it as easy as possible to create games. This is a big upgrade from Beta 1.2. There are however a few things I could really use some help in testing/improving:
- Help improving cart code/animations. I do have a folder included of quin's "cart fix" but I have been unsuccessful in implementing it
- Help cleaning up weapon code and testing to make sure monsters/weapons/any violence is removed
- Tutorials
- Strange saving of sauermod (put it in my documents)
- Test that all weapons and monsters are out/inaccessible to players
- Help improving textures/look of sandbox
- Better menu / quick menu featuring mapmodels
- Additional scenery maps / racetrack maps
- Getting movable boxes in and working (the box models have been included)

Here are the key improvements featured in this version:
- Codebase updated to the Winter 2007 Edition
- Cart mode complete with a new model
- WIP castle map for regular mode and a WIP race track for cart mode
- Lots of weapon/monster code cleanup. Removed weapon.h, rpg code, lava doesn't kill anymore, etc
- new ogre model for 3rd person mode
- new texture set which should hopefully look a lot better than the previous textures
- defaults to SP mode
- moving platform and elevator featured in castle map
- project files have been cleaned up

Any help testing and helping improving sandbox would be greatly appreciated. I especially want to get the cartmode looking and working a little better. Thanks for your time and interest. Take care.

Nice new feature list! I'm dl'ing now, so no feedback yet...

Besides creating 3D worlds, what will the kids actually DO inside these worlds? Is it going to be non-violent RPG style gameplay? Or just run and jump around with your friends online?

A nice feature would be a parental timer, i.e. game_time_limit 30 for a half an hour time limit, at which time the game stops.

I'll be back with more feedback later!

Okay, initial feedback:

Obviously, carts need work. The tire movement is reversed (doh!), i.e. when I press right, tires turn left. Also might wanna consider coding in a more free 3rd person camera for this.

Go into the cart racing simulator, and take in all the scary console output.

I don't think, in the main program, that the kids need to see what kind of gfx card they have, or what driver, although it might be useful in some cases. Most likely they will get confused and run to Mommy.

Lights, anyone? /calclight doesn't work... maps look quite drab.

Might wanna create some new sounds.

In third person, strafing looks like running (minor issue).

Teleport looks scary (to a kid).

I'll try to come up with some more later.

But nice job so far!

Thanks so much for your feedback!

The animation for the cart is definitely something I need to work on and if any pros want to help out please feel free. I think I can adjust the "hovercar" aspect with using "pitch" but a problem I encountered before is then the cart gets stuck. I'll have to play with it a bit. I don't really know how to make those animations for the tires look correct and to make them spin when going left and right. Hopefully someone can at least point me in a good direction. What did you have in mind for a more "free" third person camera?

I would imagine the reason calclights doesn't work is because I didn't add any lights. Those maps are very much WIP and I didn't want to delay the release for them. Did you have any advice for the maps, such as ways to make them not look so drab?

Thanks again for your feedback! Take care and have a good one.

When I played the kart racer a little more, the cam seemed fine again...

Well, I added a bunch of lights to the 'castle' map, and did a /calclight, but still fullbright.

As to ways to make them look less drab, add detail! Lights always helps, though.

And you will definitely have to go through all the commands you deleted and make sure the engine isn't calling them, and the keys that used to call them aren't bound anymore. i.e. press TAB; unknown command 'showscores'. unknown command 'name', 'team' etc. It will take a lot of effort to clean up the code, but you're doing a good job so far!

#6: Some ideas

by AzraelUK on 01/17/2008 23:40

Make the cart into a hovercraft - that way you don't have to have turning animations, etc., and it looks a lot more fun IMO too.

Also, make the lava take away a small amount of health, and then bounce you into the air, like in Super Mario 64.

Maybe make the conoutf() function only output anything if /debug 1 is set or something along those lines?

Or, why not just make this a sandbox and a cart mode for sauer? Sauer is (I'm just loosely quoting from the docs here) a game, not a game creation kit.

Personally, I think it'd be better if all that weapon stuff was left in, but kiddified - nerfguns and waterballoons, and disappearing on "death" like happens in "Nerf:Arena Blast"

#9: Nerf guns

by Nomad on 01/19/2008 15:38

Yeah, sounds like a kid would like that...A good to add.

I think a little kid would not want to be and ogre...how about asking them what gender they want to be? :)

LOL! Nice Hirato! :) still, the Nerf™ Guns should run on darts and you can find them in crates on the ground!

Also I'd love to help out with this program!

My sister played it and she said it was pretty cool! :D

If you are interested in writing tutorials you can also just help out with the Sandbox wiki:
http://www.kids.platinumarts.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

I would be very interested your tutorial help, thanks for writing something up!

AzraelUK thank you for the hovercart suggestion!! I think I really might try to run with that. The reason I can't make this just an addition to sauer is because then kids would have access to weapons and such. This is to answer other people's questions about the "tame" fighting gameplay, but Sandbox is currently making its way into schools. I'm not sure how accepting they would be to kids fighting each other in any form and also it would be a distraction from the actual creation. I have thought about making a "teaching" edition so possibly a "tame" gameplay version could be possible in the future. I have also thought about an "adult" version of Sandbox which retains the weapons and such. Right now I'm just trying to focus on the basics and get things to a point where it makes sandbox ideal to be used in schools, and after school programs that I'm helping to start up. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Take care.
