The 486DX ran at 133mhz. For you youngin's; alot of older (read: badly written) programs that were clockspeed dependent, ran way too fast at this speed, which is why they implemented a "Turbo" button, it basically let you "underclock" the PC at will.

Ah, I remember writing good old Quickbasic stuff and being proud of the beeps coming from my PC speaker. Them were the days.

Well, I'll be damned - you know I was on Macintosh during the 486 days but had to do jobs on 486s/Win 3.1 - I always wondered what that "turbo Button" did - one would of thought it would crank up the speed rather than make it run at a normal speed relative to the program... Until now I never knew that puzzled me as it obviously did!

I'm not sure what cooling you're using, since that would be the most extreme overclocking I've ever seen in my life. Before making silly statements about hardware you're unfamiliar with, try learning about it a little. Each core in an AMD Phenom 9500 Agena (no plus after the 9500) runs at 2.2GHz.

That means that even if the processing speed for a multithreaded app was a simple multiplication (which, as has already been point out, it is not), the maximum would be 8.8GHz, not 40GHz.

Anyway.

Ah, yes! I remember the days of the turbo button. We had a 386 for a while when I was growing up. 100MB hard drive, I think, and that was LARGE in the day.

so many idots =^) he does not have a 486 running at 500+ most likely A I586 intel p2 or p3 cpu

anyone that even considered what he said to be correct must be idiot

the fastest I486 I have seen is a 166

#38: All these numbers

by Poroc on 01/15/2008 13:59

I am a self taught computer fizz.

Must admit, i know more about the pieces rather then the data, the hardware than the software, so this is rather interesting for me.

I presumed 486 was meaning a 486 Mghz and above, too about 900 Mghz.
Cause i havent heard of 566 or even a 586 for that matter.
I thought P1 was 133 Mghz.
Why would you call a 90 - 133 or 166 Mghz a 486?

Thats like calling an old renault car a fuel injected twin turbo sports car.

whatever.

If you started out with a 486 thats cool, i started out with a commodore vic 20.
Had to beg to play the amiga 500 at my friends house.

I never heard of a quad core but doesnt sound like its for a 'playing games' computer.
I would prefer a single core with the same number of Ghz as mentioned, or a master core with a secondary smaller core for running those secondary apps, updates etc.

Poroc.

Think about it...
What if you were a cardesigner and cranked out 12 different models each year for a period of 5 years.

It would be sensible to assign numbers to your models, since using names is rather stupid: "Was the Moosecar built before or after the Kittencab?"..

..although I see a bit of a point in what you're trying to get across. :)

Also, multiple-core PCs are fine for playing games, as long as the games are optimized for the multiple cores. Try playing a game like Supreme commander on a single-core PC: it won't be fun at all.

#41: Prophecy

by Drakker__ on 01/15/2008 19:16

Hmm, this level was really just a way for me to familiarize with Cube script. I sent it to Aard so he could look at some bug I had and I took the occasion to annoy him until he added a sleep command for cubescript.

Since I forgot to mark egysp1 as a beta or a tech demo, when the time came to release the next version fo Cube, Aard included the level by error...

If I had ever completed it, the prophecy would have been cut, the music changing script too because the available music files were changing in cube around that time. I would probably have left the skill level increasing script intact though (HA!).

Thatès about it, I wonder how many people still play Cube... as far as I know no new release is planned for cube, but if one is ever made, I could complete the level.

Could always finish it in Sauer... :)

by Drakker__ on 01/17/2008 20:42

Yeah, but Sauer doesn't have the cube triggers I used to make walls vanish for secret passages.

But if anyone want to makes door models that look like walls, I'd be happy to oblige. :)

I haven't tried this in a while - but see no reason the feature should've vanished - you can reskin given models rather easily ... simply provide your own md3 or md2.cfg - a box should skin well with any given texture - that one door (#3) (at least from one side) is very boxy - secret passages tend to open once-only ... you should be fine with that

To be clear:
do NOT overwrite the md2 or md3.cfg you find for the original model;
create a copy in your own package subdirectory and re-skin it that way!

I have a 40 MB Harddisk (Working!!!).
But I don't use it. ;)

And my router is a K5 (133MHz). Only with a 1.44 Floppy driver. And the cool part is that there is no noise after the boot (floppy) because there isn't a single cooling fan. :D

@Poroc: Be carfully with "having fun destroying old cpus" because they can explode.

Some computer-magazines tested what happens if you let CPUs (that do not have a emergency shutdown function) run without any cooling device.
They exploded and not only destroyed the mainboard sockel but also put a hole in the table where the mainboard was lying on.
I'm sure you will find videos about this on the net.

Really? The most I've ever seen was a ~233 MHz Celeron accidentally overclocked to 500 MHz end up permanently unstable and show a few scorch marks.

I'm kind of intrigued now... Got any links? :)

Hmm.. I searched some more and it seems that the video was a fake. So CPUs do not explode.
I think it is better this way for us Computer users. ;)
