Sauerbraten MMO

by Neckername on 01/05/2008 02:34, 16 messages, last message: 01/07/2008 02:00, 2264 views, last view: 05/05/2024 04:47

Is it possible to make an MMO out of Sauerbraten? It would be nice. Runescape style free servers or pay to get better content.

similiar things have been suggested, but this is simply out of the question.
Sauerbraten is free, as in free speech. also Sauerbraten is an FPS, so that completely takes turning it an MMORPG out of the question.

Also Runescape is one of the lamest games I've ever played.

Also if you think I'm being mean, wait till a few of the other forum members get here

If you replace all content (ALL of it) and are willing to spend a very long time reworking the source code, then yes, you can turn it into an MMO. And I think you mean "make an MMO powered by Cube Engine II".

And Hirato, I hope you don't think I'm that mean :)

It's totally *possible*, but probably not *feasible* and definitely not *easy*. If the idea does interest you, take a look at some of our community errata:

Follow up. This has also been discussed several times before, the forum does instruct you to search before asking a question:

Three students in my computer tech class play Runescape to kill free time.

The rest of us play Pokemon. >_>

Ewwww, Runescape

I was thinking of a online "flash" version for cube 1. Since it is based on c/c++, there might be a way to modify the source so that it would run in astro. Getting it to run through air is only half the battle and getting it to run fully online would be much more difficult. Flex would make some of this easier because flex provides a more traditional programming environment while still being flash based.

The details of astro have not fully been released so this is based mostly off press statements and technology demos, but they did get quake 3 to run in astro:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hX-Uh3oTcE&feature=related

Thats... um... Quake 1, BTW.

And seriously, it looks cool, but as AS is interpreted, and then you're using C/C++ as a script, even Cube might be too much for smaller rigs (like mine). fps 1, etc.

should have recognized the sprites, all the quakes are sort of just a blur now.

and james, it would not actually be a flash version since it would not really be running cube in actionscript. Flash would be acting more as the environment in which cube could be run. As i stated earlier, it would be much easier to just have the user download all the cube files and then run a small script to run them through flash. The more difficult part will be the content delivery.

C/C++ inside Flash? Ouch.
Good luck with that.

#14: Flash/C++

The project that does this translates the C++/C code into actionscript. If you watch the demo of it on youtube, you can see that even on their computer, quake 1 is getting a pretty bad fps in flash.

It CAN be done. But it would require a monumental effort on the part of whoever decided to try it to make it happen.
