Inspiration for great maps!

by LordVeXoR on 12/26/2007 03:51, 13 messages, last message: 01/15/2008 04:50, 1772 views, last view: 05/05/2024 19:18

I am a relatively new mapper and I was wondering where all the great mappers get their ideas.

So please post if you have some kind of ideas on where to get inspiration!

Sincerely,
Lord VeXoR

#1: Unreal Tournament

You might try remaking an Unreal Tournament map.

It has been done (See the map face-capture and serpentine).

You can get an Unreal Tournament Demo (I suggest 1999 GOTY) and work form there.

Yeah, I'd say that most Unreal 99/2k4 DM maps would work well. Just keep in mind the movement dynamics and you'll be good

I get most of my ideas from architecture. I especially like walking in the late night / early morning. You can get some really neat ideas just by walking a few miles every night (and work off those cheetos while you're at it)

#6: Sleep on it

I get my ideas for my maps from my anything.
The idea for one of my Sci-Fi maps (Got posted on Quadropolis, rating of 4.5) came from a cat whisker.
The cat whisker just chained some ideas and next thing I knew I had a map.

Read a few fiction books, sleep after watching horror movies and taking Valarian.

If you don't get any ideas by then, resign from presidency PLEASE.

I get my ideas mostly from textures actually. Sauerbraten has so many textures. Yet I am very scatter brained so I have about 3-4 simple, half-made maps.

I\'ve made a pyramid (long and hard to do) a statue, and other things with the bricks, its nice to fool around, even made an odd looking tank, just for show really.

Though I am new to map making, but Sauerbraten is not to complicated, Im still not too good, but I can make jump-pads and buildings.

Its amazingly easy to learn I think, im alot of self taught and tons of mistake.

#8: Making maps the beginning

by Poroc on 01/13/2008 04:31

Howdy folks.

I am very interested to start making my own maps.

Will some nice fellow give me a few pointers to get started and make things easy.

I'm not sure even how to start, i think it may have something to do with the 'e' for editing button but i cant understand the commands that are there.

Is it very hard to make maps?

I want to start a map from scratch see.

All i need are the commands for mites, scenary, ammo etc etc.

I can make ammo and armour in editing while playing cube but for some reason i cant collect them?

Which doesnt bother me really cause i dont want to edit and strap on someone elses map creation anyway.

I just want to start from nothing.

O.K If no one will tell me ( cause it took them too long to learn by themselves ) ( Im cool with that )just give one little clue and tell me this:
is it as easy as duke nukem maps?

It will give me great inspiration for some greate maps if i knew how to start placing brain waves onto the drawing board!

The inspiration for a map i would like to creat comes from a box of chicken snax.

HaHaHa, LOL, Just joking fellows.

Poroc.

A good first step would be to read docs/editing.html and glance through docs/editref.html. The former being an overview of editing and the latter being a breakdown of most of the commands.

Then press E on a map that came with Sauer and look around it, play around in it, see how other mappers have done things. Avoid saving those maps when you make changes, because that can cause strange things to happen when you play with others.

Good luck! :)

O.K. I have had a look in docs and noticed it was for sauerbraten which is why i took no notice.
( Also my reading glasses were stepped on they have cracks all the way through them )

I will read through docs properly cause perhaps you mean this tutorial/guide in docs/editing for sauerbraten will be the same for cube1.

I couldnt notice it saying anywhere in docs that map making for sauerbraten is the same for cube1.
( Im not saying it does or doesnt )

Hmmm.

Perhaps because sauerbraten succeeded cube1 the commands etc and programming is all very much the same.

I havent had access to play sauerbraten see and my 486 wont do it.

I want to create a map and engrave my name on it and also want it to be perfected, i will work day and night if i have to.

Thankyou

Kind regards

Poroc

P.S. I dont have to pay for these blogs do i ?

Check out the documentation that came with Cube. Look in Cube/docs, and you should find several HTML files. Those are the files I meant, sorry for any confusion. Then go ahead and look at some Cube maps and see how those were made.

And you're right, there are quite a few similarities between Sauerbraten and Cube as far as map editing goes, but you'll be much more successful (and less frustrated) if you use the Cube documentation when trying to map in Cube. :)

Oh, and you don't have to pay to post on these forums.

#12: inspiration

by MeatROme on 01/14/2008 01:07

I've had a couple of inspirations from RL architecture - just riding the subway or walking the streets - but the best stuff to try and rebuild (IMHO) came from TV.
Seriously - the set-designers on SciFi or historical shows really do much the same thing as level-designers!

Thanks heaps 'Demosthenes'.

I have already begun work on a #%$^& style map and loving it.

I show my friends that im a level developer and games engineer (LOL)
Im not really but they are not my friends anyway, you guys are :)
Aaaaaawwwww :)

Am very proud to be a "map maker" now.

In response too 'LordVexor' inspiration for greate maps:

The inspiration i guess for maps is too have a little of everything in it.

Also go back to the saved copies of your very first maps and perhaps you may sense a final result for a unfinished construction.

I would never lose my first map.

I noticed keg barrels in the cube editing itinerary, how about a-sort-of pub-ish map.

How about a map in a cannon?

How about an all underground passageway map?

How about a map called "iffyiffycancanbingbangbong"?
Just jokes. No offence. Honestly.

I like too think of my dream homes, near the beach in the forest etc etc.
Perhaps a mansion map?

Perhaps even walk the country side and look for scenary that appeals.
For instance lots'a'trees.

I just had a thought of a loading dock.

Cheers...

Poroc.
