NYC map - WIP

by Red on 12/22/2007 22:18, 146 messages, last message: 06/26/2014 21:06, 103497 views, last view: 05/14/2024 08:20

Hi! I decided to create a new thread about my map - NYC - I'm still working on. This map will probably be the largest map ever made for Sauerbraten. I will post new screenshots here. Feel free to comment.

#82: big maps are a disaster waiting to happen

by paintball9 on 04/08/2008 21:09

ive got one on the go, 2048 across and is a replica of the pyramids of giza, it takes 15 minutes to load and crashed when i try to copy sections. i currently have 42 million cubes and im not even half done, as well as no lighting yet and only solid buildings so far no tunnels even started, only minimal textures and no mapmodels. if anyone wants to take a look at it its posted here http://hostfil.es/file/10968/sauerbraten-project-ogz.html
warning: it is actually that big, its brought every system ive tried it on to its knees.

Menus do not auto-update,
your console will autocomplete though (everything you put in packages/base/).

You can use an ordinary text editor, like Notepad.

I really hope this makes it (although I doubt I'll get more than like one frame per second, it looks HUGE)

These images seem to have High dynamic range (HDR) lighting, from what i can see... Are you adding this, or does Sauerbraten actually support it?? I've never seen it

its not HDR its bloom and yes sauer supports bloom by default bit of a FPS killer tho and I don't think its going to be that bad on load times

give US A BEATA!!!

Well, i love this idea, and i would like to know if this project is still alive. This is awesome! Please, could you make a beta version, only to let us walk around the city? dont worry abount unfinished areas. I only want to delight my eyes.

BTW, are you going to make a subway or something?

paintball9:

I didn\'t have any major problems running that map. 2-5 minutes loading time (I didn\'t pay attention; I kept reading the forums while it was loading), solid 60FPS without having to turn anything down. However, Sauer was using 1.5GB RAM all to itself, so I figured I\'d take a look at the wireframe. My FPS dropped down to 30-40 just from turning on the outline. Note that I have two 8800 Ultras in SLI - That kind of a performance hit should not be happening, and basically just isn\'t cool. I could have sworn your pyramids were actually textured a solid black. A simple pass of Optimize Geometry (In the mapop menu, can\'t miss it) dropped the ram usage down to 220MB and fixed the FPS issue. The ogz is also 171kb now instead of 2.5mb. I uploaded the result for you as it seems to give you problems loading it, let alone doing anything with it. Just remember to optimize once in awhile to keep your polycount from going out of hand, and everything will be ok :)

Anyway, I\'d love to check out this NYC map if you\'re still working on it. Even if you\'ve quit, please upload what you have - I\'d love to see it. The screenshots look amazing!
